Science by reconstruction and re-experimentation

The major point that came out of this wave of archaeological science is that
people in the new stone age were more sophisticated technologically than
had been appreciated in the past. We found that just by tying dug out canoes together people far further back in time could make ocean crossings.
The colonization of Australia was pushed back further into pre-history, when books in the 60's set it a 10000 years ago. I think maybe the thing that stands out is the snail like pace of progress, between 20000 years ago and now. It appears that in some ways social structures / civilizations have restricted innovation instead of encouraging it?
This book and the science that has followed it has been "enlightening" to all of pre-history.

About the Author
Trici Schraeder, MS, CCC-SLP received her BA and MS degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed her Clinical Fellowship for her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in medical settings in 1975-76; worked as a school-based speech-language pathologist for 14 years in Wisconsin public schools; and has held a teaching appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1989. Trici is a past Vice President of School Services for the Wisconsin Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Professional Association (WSHA-P); was a recipient of the WSHA 2002 Outstanding Service Award; was the first appointed Wisconsin State Education Advocacy Leader (SEAL); and is a four-time recipient of an Award for Continuing Education (ACE) from ASHA.

Trici served on the ASHA ad hoc committee that created the Position Statement, Technical Report, Guidelines, Implementation Guide, and Teleweb/CD Seminar related to the workload analysis approach to caseload standards in public schools.

Trici also served as the chair of the ASHA ad hoc committee that created the professional performance review process for the school-based speech-language pathologist.

Trici has served on several Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction ad hoc professional committees and has been a speaker at numerous state and national conventions including ASHA conventions in Seattle, Washington D. C., New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami.

She served a three-year term as an editorial consultant for the Journal of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools. Her research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, Seminars in Speech and Language, Texas Journal of Audiology and Speech Pathology, and Exceptionality Education Canada.

This book is fantastic. Everyone can relate to it in at least some way because it contains a little bit of everything. There are ups, there are downs. This is real, unscripted, nonfictional life, folks. You want to know if other wives are as annoyed over certain things? Read on. You want to know what the feelings you'll be experiencing post-separation? Read on. Want to know how to make sure your kids come out the other end better than ever? Then read on friend because Jessica has raised three of the most kind, intelligent, beautiful souls you could ever hope to encounter.

An Unexpected Gem. Fans of JK Rowling's Life-story Should Read This.

This is an important work...but not just for the reasons you'd think.

In her wincingly candid account of her own post-divorce self-deconstruction and rebuilding process, Miss Vivian uncovers a horrorshow of some basic truths about everything from a chasm of gender inequality to the horridly inadequate social safety-net in place for single moms. Reading this book makes it all too clear to see the complex and multifaceted problems that face women with children who are trapped in bad marriages, in a state of poverty, in a social-structure whose parameters don't allow or afford them the opportunity to escape mentally, physically or emotionally unscathed no matter how hard they work at it. No matter how disciplined they are at doing what's right. Not without outside help. Not without miracles-worth of outside help.

There exists, thankfully, a movement of socially-conscious people who vote and care about social responsibility, of widening the safety-net, of dispelling the tropes and myths of "the welfare queen" but I wonder how many of them really have an intimate picture of that struggle in their minds--not just from the perspective of a few anecdotes about hardworking people who simply fell on hard times and need help getting back to their feet--but of the reality that there exists a population of bright, prodigal women who have so much to contribute, condemned to be stuck in the mire because they never had that footing in the first place...or because every path along their route is littered with walls and obstacles.

Not since Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel And Dimed" (a work I highly recommend as a companion to this, by the way) has a work of nonfiction made the trap of American poverty so abundantly clear...but it's more than just that. It's more than just the numbers or the scarcity. The statistics, the day-to-day realities. These are also Miss Vivian's feelings. This book depicts the inner struggle--often self-contradictory, even--of a mother, a thinker, a lover and home-cooked philanthropist. A lady, like each and every one of us, with aspirations to change the future for herself, her children and the community...for the better of us all.

Never preachy, this was a page-turner. I read the book in a weekend and found myself rooting for her; sometimes angry, sometimes in tears. At times, on the edge of my seat, hoping that each effort, each battle would net her the Big Break that makes the whole war worthwhile and cracks open the world like an oyster for her own indulgence.

I hope this writer reads her reviews because I'd like her to know that in me, she's got a fan. I await her next work with adoring anticipation.

A true story

This is not a self-help, feel-good, cliche dripped book about how awesome life really is. This is a book about a real woman facing real life and that isn't always kind and it can't always be fixed with chocolate and cocktails. Jessica Vivian holds nothing back, and opens herself wide for the world to see and take away from it what they will; whatever inspiration, whatever spark of truth. The pages of this story hold more than the words on them.

About the Author
Professor Stake received his B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in naval science and Spanish from the University of Nebraska in 1950. He graduated with an M.A. in educational psychology in 1954 from this university. In 1958, he received his Ph.D. in psychology from Princeton University. From 1955 to 1958, he was a Psychometric Fellow at the Educational Testing Service. Then, an Associate Professor and Faculty Research Coordinator of the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 1963, he arrived at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he assisted Thomas Hastings, Lee Cronbach, and Jack Easley in the creation of the new evaluation center, CIRCE, and in developing a program of research on program evaluation. He also became the Associate Director of the Statewide High School Testing Program. In 1975, he became director of CIRCE. He has been active in the program evaluation profession and has promoted an approach to evaluation methods called "responsive evaluation." He took up a qualitative perspective, particularly case study methods, in order to represent the personal experience and complexity of evaluation study. He received the Lazerfeld Award from the American Evaluation Association and an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala.

Decent Articulation of Case Study Methodology

This text is a decent overview of one approach to case study research. Be warned that it is a very "naturalistic" approach to case study research, as the inclusion of "art" in the title should indicate. The text offers some good guidance on how to conduct case study research, but it is a little thin on methodology, and a little heavy on intuition and justification for the use of intuition in conducting research.

Robert Stake's article in the The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research is far more informative about how to conduct case study research from a qualitative perspective, though it is obviously much shorter. Stake's advancement of a typology of case study research ("iterative", "instrumental", and "collective") is useful, as is his insistence on the value of case study research from a qualitative perspective.

For the actual conduct of case study research, the researcher should be familiar with both Robert Stake and Robert Yin, best articulated in Case Study Research: Design and Methods (Applied Social Research Methods). Yin is a more post-positivist case study researcher, and as such offers a more step by step approach to conducting case study research.

The The Art Of Case Study Research is an adequate introduction to Robert Stake's approach to case study research, and is a well-respected and seminal text in the field. Case study researchers should at least be familiar with Robert Stake and this text.

I only ordered this book because I was told I have to have it. Most of the time I find the books to be cheaper on Amazon than with the school or their book stores. Make sure you shop before using the schools to obtain the materials you need to complete your courses. This is a college book that I had to order to fulfill my class work. The book provided the information I needed to complete the entire task assigned by the facilitator. To most people there will be nothing special about this book. And I would imagine that if you are buying this book you are not doing so out of fun. Good luck in your future courses and positions. May all your classes bring you much knowledge.

A good introduction to case study research. Stake works primarily in program evaluation, but his approach can be used for any case study research design.

Spectacular Read!

Jackie Ivie just keeps getting better. You would expect a long running series to get boring but Jackie is full of surprises. She develops her characters, puts real research into where they came from, what they would wear, and how they would talk. I loved meeting the man behind Ethelstone's rough exterior, and Stephanie is a wonderful strong female lead. I loved this book, read it in one sitting, and was sad to see it end. I can't wait for the next one.

I am simply in love!!!!!!

Ok so why give this five stars it's because this woman is the best at what she does. I feel so sorry for the other twin (that's right not giving it away) you have to read the book to find out. But I will say that it broke my heart a little to see the emotion. My hero and herione was excellent for each other as always and to know that you are loved by someone so completely is magical in itself. So come on and get this book and see why Jackie has my undivided attention whenever she comes out to play. I love it Jackie Ivie another hit in my book!!!!!

Surprise-Surprise

This can be read as a stand-alone, but much more enjoyable when read in order. After having read each and every one of the books in the series, I am thrilled that the author can still take me by surprise. This story had humor, action, vampires, and steamy romance. The hero has depths we have not seen before during his appearances in other books. A reporter, the heroine gets way more involved in her story than she ever planned. If you enjoy humorous vampire romance, I recommend this story and the series as a whole.

About the Author
Colleen Coover lives in Portland, OR with her husband, fellow writer Paul Tobin. She is a member of Periscope Studio, a collective of more than twenty artists and writers who share a studio space in downtown Portland. Her comics include the adult title Small Favors and the all-ages Banana Sunday, and I frequently contribute comic strips to a variety of Marvel Comics. My illustrations appear in newspapers, magazines, and promotional materials. Paul Tobin is comic book writer whose best known works include: The Age of the Sentry, Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four, Marvel Adventures: Super Heroes, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, and other titles predominantly for Marvel Comics. Wook Jin Clark was born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in the South Carolina and Georgia. Now residing in Portland, Oregon, he is a member of Periscope Studio. He illustrated “The Return of King Doug” in late 2009 for Oni Press, which was named to the ALA Great Graphic Novels for Teens list in 2010. His new ongoing creator owned series, “MEGAGOGO”, also with Oni Press will commenced in February 2014. He recently completed a spinoff Adventure Time mini-series (Adventure Time: The Flip Side) for BOOM! Studios with fellow studio mates, Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin.

Adventure Time book that focus on the insanity

One of the thing some people love about Adventure Time is the insanity of it, and this book embraced it. Is a fun adventure all around and managed to give the reader a mind bending trip of insanity.
