It's a mistake to buy any other book

It's rare to read a text book cover to cover, but you'll find it easy to do with Marakas' DSS text. He writes as if he is lecturing in class - the examples are clear (and lively, which is rare in academia!), the language flows and the presentation of the material makes it easy even for beginners in the field (like me) to understand. Don't miss out on this text!

About the Author
Dr. Kenzo Kase was born in Japan in the early 1940s. He was a sickly child, not allowed to attend physical education classes because of this physical frailty. He was plagued by pneumonia, tuberculosis, kidney infections and all kinds of allergies. His grandmother was a Japanese healer who used herbal remedies, acupuncture and moxibustion techniques, and from her he learned the value of a healing touch. Through his own experiences and training, Dr. Kase was never forced to separate different styles and methods of healing. After graduating from chiropractic college in Chicago, he was able to combine his education in both mainstream and traditional medical techniques and philosophies. His education is in chiropractic and acupuncture, but his medical knowledge is both deeper and broader. In the research field, he works with surgeons, physiotherapists and natural healers. Part of his genius is his ability to make connections between different treatment paradigms and to help each concept progress a step or two further. Today people call it Integrative Medicine, but Dr. Kase has been using this approach for years. He has seen that there is no one-size-fits all. In essence, integrative medicine is the embodiment of alternative and evidence based medicine; a school of thought that does not distinguish between the two. Instead it focuses on wellness, health, and prevention through education and an emphasis on the patient-physician relationship; as well as the treatment of the patient s mental, emotional, and physical ailments as a whole. All these considerations are equally strong in animal care. Working with a team of equine specialists, Dr. Kase has been testing Kinesio Taping concepts and applications on horses for more than fifteen years.

An excellent start in the study of landscape architecture

This volume should be among the first 5 books anyone interested in the history of landscape must buy, no wonder it's included in the academic readings in many fine schools. The B&W photographs are remarkable, and it's filled with plans and diagrams from all over the world. In the last revised edition, covers the actual trends in landscape architecture, as well as asian and pre-columbian cultures. As an architect starting out in this field of study, I found it very helpful, and I'm sure others will!

History in magnificent photographs - by the hundreds

The original edition, hardcover with beautiful dust jacket, was printed in 1975 in England. It is one of my favorite all-time photo books, since in includes shots of Borobudur, the Ziggurat, the Red Fort in Delhi, Angkor Wat, Ctesiphon in Iraq - lots of photos hard to find even on the net. History all the way to the opera house in Sydney. A most fascinating book. Large: 9 1/4 x 11 3/4, 383 pages, a sound minimal text with each plate numbered and easily referenced - to me this is one of the great books. Everyone who has travelled, or who wants to travel, will enjoy this tremendously. (Many of the areas shown are difficult and often dangerous to visit, now.) Try it. You'll like it.

The book's only fault is that it is too comprehensive

Potter uses sterling logic to dissect, break down, and organize the various component parts of modern media. He then provides excellent, well-referenced, historical, economic, and political context for each. The author then analyzes how these influences shape the media content that we consume every day, and offers helpful online activities and downloadable resources to explore the issues. I used the book as a basis for a media course that I taught at a University in Korea and it was indispensable.

An interesting read

This book has a lot of good and interesting information about media consumption and gives the reader a good idea of how the media affects our thinking and perception of the world around us. It also gives insight into the media world and the schemes they use to grab our attention. It is easy to read but is not a thrilling read.

Auschwitz, an ordinary town?

I felt that this book was an extremely interesting book that gave a different view on the transformation of the Polish town Auscwitz. The book explains how it was once an ordinary town that soon became one of the leading concentration camps in the Nazi era. The book explains the different stages the town went through from 1270 to the present. It was once a small Polish town, then a production site for gravel and sand, later an execution site, a place where Himmler wanted to build a farm communities, and then the answer to the "Jewish" question.
What I liked about this book was that it gave a mass amount of illustrations, ranging from pictures to graphs to building plans. This book also had some eye witness accounts from the view of the Jewish survivals, explaining what their feelings and reactions were during this time. The book is broken into two parts: Nostalgia and Fullfillment and Ambition and Perdition. The first part explains the history of the town and the second part starts off with the concentration camp. The Epilogue, "Owning and Disowning Auschwitz" I thought gave a quick and interesting view on the town today and what happend to it after the fall of the Nazi's. It briefly explains the problmes that arose afterwards and the concentration camp today.
After giving the history of Auschwitz,the authors end with a question that still haunts the Jewish people today, Why?

Insightful use of architectural records

This book skillfully combines a history of German influence in the East with a detailed look at the death and labor camps of Auschwitz. Using the architectural records left behind as well as statements of people who were there to outline the story, the authors trace the development and changes of the Auschwitz camps from 1939 to the present day. The skillful use of architectural plans provides insight into the changing purposes the camp adapted to in its short but terrible life. Also, the authors trace the German influence in the area back to the founding of the town in 1270 and relate the camp's shifting purpose to the territorial goals of the Germans in the East both before and during the war.

Worst Guide Book to the Philippines !!!

Im an Australian living fulltime in the Philippines and travel extensively as I'm a realtor selling islands & beaches here. Do not waste your money buying this book. Firstly, it is a second rate copy of the previous editions written by Jen Peters. You are better of buying his "Philippines Travel Guide" also available on Amazon.
Secondly, its full of so many errors and danger warnings that I'm suprised anybody would come here if it were really true. For instance they write that Palawan is dangerous based upon a bomb being found at the airport. The bomb was in fact a defunct WWII hand grenade which was found in the grass at the edge of the runway, hardly something designed to kill tourists. It warnings about danger in Palawan are COMPLETELY wrong in every instance. I live there and crime and danger are almost non-existant. Yes the Abu Sayeff kidnapped people from a resort, but they were from Mindanao on the other extreme of the Philippines and there has not been 1 single incident since then .. 5 YEARS AGO!
El Nido, one of the best places in the Philippines see EL-NIDO.NET The authors came for 1 day and how can the possibly have researched a whole town in 1 day? The write that the trip from Puerto to El Nido by road is 14 hours, when in fact it is now only 7 hours and half of that on the new concrete highway.
Yes, there are dangers in the Philippines, but I feel safer here than living in any western city. Provided that you follow common sense you wont have any trouble here. This is one of the most under-rated tourism spots on the globe, exactly because of lame travel books and stupid travel advisories from overseas embassies.
Do yourself a favour buy the Jens Peters Guide and ignore whatever the Lonely Planet Guide says.

Does not live up to the Lonely Planet standard

I love Lonely Planet travel guides. The pithy been-there-done-that tone and insider information is invaluable. Every where I travel, I take along an LP guide. My recent trip to the Philippines was no different, but I cannot recommend this travel guide to anyone. The LP Philippines guide simply does not live up to the standard.

The historical information is biased and slightly anti-American. The authors go out of their way to make anti-American comments throughout the historical section, while saying little or nothing about the historical atrocities committed by other nations in the Philippines (Japanese death march anyone?). The authors clearly feel that is their duty to inform the world that the United States is an empire building, bumbling, inept nation. I found the condescending tone and political prejudices personally offensive.

Secondly, I felt like the guide was written like a research report. There is so much that isn't reflected in the guide. We hired a taxi or van (with the driver) for about 2,000 pesos and hit all the tourist areas for the entire a day, in Bohol, Cebu, and Davao (note: it is expected you feed the driver and he eats with you or at another table). Depending on how you negotiate, the rate can go as high as 5,000 per day for an air conditioned van and driver. This guide would have you waiting for taxi's or navigating Jeepney routes all day.

In general, the travel information is adequate for the northern islands, with some notable exceptions. If you plan on visiting Mindanao, find another travel guide entirely. The authors are simply ignorant of the political situation in the Philippines, and the section on Mindanao is filled with inaccurate travel warnings.

The information about Mindanao and Davao are almost non-existent. If you are going to visit Mindanao, I would urge you to get another travel guide. After spending time in and around Davao, I began to wonder if any of the authors actually visited Davao, or did their exploration over the telephone.

The information in Manila is incomplete. I was amazed at how little information was available on a modern city of that size.

Surprisingly, the information about Cebu and Bohol, was more or less correct, but the price information was totally out of whack on panglao island on some of the resort hotels.

I was recently in Indonesia for several months for work, and I could not thank Lonely Planet enough for a wonderful job that is the Indonesia guidebook, which we referred to as The Bible in the course of our travel. When I came back home, I bought the Philippines guidebook because I was curious how they did it. I was so disappointed! The inaccuracies and omissions were horrible. One appalling omission: arguably the Philippines biggest and most colorful festival, the annual Sinulog in Cebu, is nowhere mentioned in the book. (I'm telling you guys planning to go the Philippines, this book could have been a lot thicker). And the worst part of reading this guidebook, you get the sense that as if the writers hacked their way through the archipelago to write this. Unlike in the Indonesia book wherein the writers sound like they truly loved the places they covered and have in fact spent some time in the places to be able to write about them accurately, in the Philippines guidebook it seemed that they finished it just to get over it, without passion and care. (Although I have to admit, Manila was amply covered). I suggest you still get this book for some practical tips, but for the attractions themselves, you could visit the website of the Philippine Department of Tourism ([...]) to complement what's written in this book.

About the Author

Stephen C. McCaffrey is one of the world's foremost experts on international water resources law and is one of the few Americans to have served as chair of the United Nations International Law Commission. He has published several books and dozens of law review articles in the field of international law, argued in front of The World Court, taught law courses in American and foreign universities, advised the State Department, and represented foreign governments and entities in various transnational disputes. Thomas O. Main is an emerging scholar in the field of procedural jurisprudence. He is author of Global Issues in Civil Procedure (Casebook Series) (2005) and is coauthor of Civil Procedure: Doctrine, Practice, and Context (2008) and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (2007). He has taught numerous law courses in the United States and elsewhere.

Hayden has chronicled experiences from her long career as a special education teacher in several books, including One Child and The Tiger's Child. Successes in this difficult and often frustrating field can be few and hard-won, which Hayden deftly illustrates while simultaneously offering hope and joy in small victories. This time she brings to life the story of a scruffy seven-year-old, Venus, who is so unresponsive that Hayden searches for signs of deafness, brain damage or mental retardation. Familiar with Venus's siblings, other teachers warn Hayden not to expect much from Venus. Yet the author is relentless in her attempt to diagnose the cause of Venus's "almost catatonic" state, which is punctuated by occasional violent outbursts. Suspecting "elective mutism," a refusal to talk "for psychological reasons," Hayden persists in trying to draw Venus out. Her patient dedication finally pays off when the girl shows an interest in She-Ra, Princess of Power comic books. From there, a story of domestic abuse, removal to foster care and a slow emergence from silent isolation unfolds. However, Venus is not the only fascinating character here. Hayden sets Venus's bittersweet and complex story against the backdrop of other students, including one boy with a very high IQ but behavioral problems, another with Tourette's syndrome and a girl who inexplicably spouts sophisticated poetry and talks to her hand. Hayden's approach is straightforward and heartwarmingly compassionate not only in its portrayal of the relationships she developed with her students, but also in its appraisal of a philosophical conflict with her teacher's aide and the effect this had on the functioning of the students. The challenge of creating a highly structured, safe, yet sensitive and supportive environment for five children between the ages of six and nine, all with multiple emotional and developmental handicaps, is a study in creativity, perseverance, and keen observation. The author vividly describes her early struggles to inspire bonding among her charges and incremental progress in leading them toward norms of social behavior. The book ultimately focuses on Venus, age seven, whose impoverished and abusive home life frames the backdrop upon which her steps toward trust are poignantly rendered. Twins Shane and Zane, affected by fetal alcohol syndrome; Jesse, afflicted with Tourette's syndrome; and brash and aggressive Billy certainly present a full spectrum of challenges, but it is with Venus that the teacher's most indomitable problem-solving skills are engaged. Insightful and eminently readable, this book will be of particular value to students with a career interest in special education, social services, or counseling.

Special education teacher Hayden is known for her powerful stories of children suffering from various forms of child abuse and trauma. Beautiful Child is another such story. As she did in her previous best sellers (Just Another Kid, Ghost Girl, The Tiger's Child), Hayden passionately narrates the story of her work with a special-needs child, Venus an unresponsive, almost catatonic seven-year-old girl. (Hayden also introduces us to the other children in her classroom primarily to Billy, Jesse, and twins Shane and Zane.) Called "beautiful child" by Wanda, the "sister" who brings her to school, Venus is far from beautiful: her appearance is unkempt, and she morphs from a brick wall into a banshee when her space is invaded. Hayden thoughtfully describes her struggles to form this particular class into a cohesive group and the many techniques used to coerce even the smallest response from Venus. Slowly, the class bonds, and even more slowly comes progress with Venus. This inspiring true story is recommended for most special-education as well as psychology collections. Touches the heart

Torrey's well written book touches the heart as she goes through her days in the classroom with her special education students. She introduces each child and their needs, but especially Venus her most challenging student, who most people had given up on helping. Torrey's tenacity and concern for Venus worked small "miracles" in this troubled and abused child's life.
There were times while reading the book that I couldn't put it down and read with a broken heart for Venus.
I highly recommend this book for your reading. If you've ever spent time with children in an educational setting, you will especially enjoy Beautiful Child.

Funny, sad, incredible events

I enjoyed this book, and laughed at the comments made by Billy, and was saddened by the way children are treated by their parents. Torey did a great job in putting this altogether and then ended it superbly - don't want to add a spoiler here. The story telling developed well, and as such, I could not put the book down. A must read.

I have followed Torey Hayden's teaching career from the beginning. Each year her teaching methods srrm to evolve as she is met with a new group of students. All of Torey's pupils are individuals to her, each with their own set of problems and strengths. Most learn much from Torry, who seemo to learn much from each of them.
