The RIVERKEEPERS: Two Activists Fight to Reclaim Our Environment as a Basic Human Right, by John Cronin, Robert Kennedy

A modern-day David and Goliath tale, The Riverkeepers is an impassioned firsthand account by two advocates who have taken on powerful corporate and government polluters to win back the Hudson River. John Cronin and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., tell us how we too can fight for our fundamental right to enjoy our invaluable natural resources.
Revealing shocking stories of commonplace environmental crime -- from drinking water tainted with hospital waste to fish populations contaminated by freely dumped PCBs -- Cronin and Kennedy describe their dramatic confrontations with more than ninety environmental lawbreakers. The Riverkeepers is a timely call to action that will resonate across America as the backlash spearheaded by congressional leaders and their major corporate allies threatens to reverse the hard-won victories in environmental law and policy.

Amazon.com Review
In the 1960s the Hudson River, under threat from polluters and energy concerns but beloved by its shoreline residents and local fishermen, became one of the United States' first major environmental battlegrounds. Out of those early legal wrangles emerged some important environmental legislation, and also the Soundkeeper organization, with a mandate to fight for the health of this historic New York river.

This book reveals something about the organization, and even more about the history of the Hudson and environmentalism in America, from John Winthrop to Newt Gingrich, and quite a bit, too, about the upbringings--glamorous (who'd have thought keeping a pet seal in your swimming pool would lead to activism?) and not-so-unusual--of its authors. Promising early chapters sketch out the exploitation of the river by industry and describe some of its colorful champions. (One of the most interesting here is Robert H. Boyle, the writer of a seminal account of the Hudson, The Hudson River: A Natural and Unnatural History, who comes off as a hero.) A terrific final section explains in accessible terms the basis for environmental law in the founding of our country. In between, this book sometimes falters under the weight of too much information. You can't fault these writers for the work they've done, or for the scattered gems of thoughtful information on the modern environmental movement, which make this book worth reading. Just be prepared to pick through some irrelevancies (did Bobby Shriver really bring a leopard tortoise home for Robert Kennedy Jr. from Kenya in a suitcase?) to get to the heart of this unusual book. --Maria Dolan

From Library Journal
Former Hudson River commercial fisherman Cronin became an environmental activist when he saw that his river was too polluted to fish and founded Riverkeepers, of which Kennedy is chief prosecuting attorney. Here they tell the story of Riverkeepers' battle against environmental offenders.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Two leaders of the Hudson Riverkeeper organization, a New Yorkbased environmental advocacy group, recount their legal and public-relations battles against the polluters of one of America's famed waterways. Cronin, a former Hudson River commercial fisherman, and Kennedy, one of the new generation of that storied family, are, respectively, head and chief prosecuting attorney of the Hudson Riverkeeper group. The Hudson River, which had inspired artists and environmentalists such as Thomas Cole, Theodore Roosevelt, and John Burroughs, had become so polluted by the 1960s that swimming in its waters was forbidden. Cronin and Kennedy trace the grass-roots environmental activism that culminated in the formation of their organization in 1983. Since then, the group has filed close to 100 lawsuits, reportedly induced polluters to pay close to half a billion dollars to help restore the river, achieved a landmark agreement to protect New York City's water supply, and spawned a number of similar groups. The authors depict their enemies as numerous, well funded, and unscrupulous--including corporations such as Exxon and General Electric, as well as the ``most antienvironmental Congress in the nation's history.'' Despite their self-righteous rhetoric, the authors outline three important ways to counter right-wing stereotypes about environmental elitism. First, they advocate acting locally. Second, they urge that environmentalism not be seen as anti-growth, but as a way to preserve a decades-old industry (fishing) and prevent long-term community blight by companies who pursue short-term strategies. Third, they see environmentalism as the ultimate struggle ``against special interests who would monopolize, exclude, and liquidate [resources] for cash.'' While hardly objective, this manifesto sheds much light on how the modern environmental movement emerged at the local level and how it is striving to deal with the current, more hostile political landscape. -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. More than I bargained for
By Plankie
I bought this book thinking it would offer a profile of environmental activism that could be turned into action by others- I wanted to see how they did what they did. This I got, but also much more. This a most enlightening book, superbly written, difficult to put down. You get not only a history of environmental activism on the Hudson River, but a brief history of same in the U.S., complete with philosophical underpinnings. If you don't know how corporations act in the U.S., or how government complicity coddles them, read this book. If you THINK you know, read this book. If you are at all concerned about your rights as a citizen, and how they relate to the environment, read this book! An important, gripping work, at once hopeful and dismaying- and certainly inspiring.

The Reasons Behind Environmentalism
By Jasphil
I spent most of my younger years in the Hudson Valley, and the work of the Riverkeepers has made a profound and positive impact on our local environment. The story of how they have stood up to the corporate and government polluters is outlined here and is inspiring.

The real story of The Riverkeepers is outlining why they do what they do - our right to clean air, water, and an unspoiled environment. These are not priviliges, they are rights.

For years, anti-environmental hacks have been trying to convince us that to be for the environment is to be anti-property rights, anti-growth, and, as Rush Limbaugh calls us, "wackos." The Riverkeepers points out that these people are motivated by at best a misunderstanding of the issues, and at worst motivated by pure profit.

To be an environmentalist, The Riverkeepers points out, is to be for the very essence of American democracy: the rights of the people to stand up and protect our children, property, livelihoods, and future. The Riverkeepers will not only inspire you, it will make you feel at home in your caring for the environment, by showing you your place in the traditions and philosophy behind the environmental movement.

Timeless subject, brilliant interludes, flawed whole.
By A Customer
Yes, you have read elsewhere that the authors' egos play too central a role in this documentary. Perhaps true. Nevertheless, the characters, the battles over the Hudson, and the Hudson itself are powerfully and vividly portrayed. The incredible numbers of examples of environmental abuse carried out by priviledged and powerful elements of society (whether corporate, governmental, or, in rarer cases, individual) are shocking and thought provoking. Even more shocking are the revelations of behind-the-scenes political scheming and public image manipulation by the perpetrators of environmental atrocities, and the readiness of some in society to accept these at face value. The 15-year effort by Con-Edison to irreversibly scar Storm King Mountain by building a water-pumping and energy-reclamation facility into its face is one particularly memorable example. The portrait which Cronin and Kennedy paint is that of the true welfare cheats of american society- those well-off enough to buy (usually at subsidized prices) wilderness (or wilderness access) from the public, multiply their fortunes by ruthlessly exploiting and destroying our environmental resources, AND, upon sucking the resource dry, saddling the public with every last consequence and cost of their pillage, all while actively harassing and slandering those who might question their methods, or advocate for the rights of the public whose environmental heritage is at risk. It is within this stark context that Cronin and Kennedy's stories emerge- the stories of the local fishermen, sportsmen, writers, and everyday people whose lives have been touched and filled by the majesty and beauty of nature around them, and who, because of direct threats to their natural surroundings (and sometimes, their families, health, and livelihoods) are drawn into struggles against extreme odds. These stories are the brilliant gems within the book that make it so worthwhile. Flaws and all, this is a book which all of my friends and family will receive as a stocking stuffer- beautiful stories, a little ego here and there, but nevertheless serious food for thought, and action.

In the Company of Tibetan Monks: Opening Our Home, Hearts and Minds to the Wonderfully Unexpected, by Suzanne R. Bauer

Suzanne agreed to host a few of the seven Tibetan monks when they visited Ohio on their 2012 World Peace Cultural Tour. Due to a last minute change of
plans, she and her husband John hosted all of the monks and their driver for nine days in their home. Although Suzanne and John are world travelers, they
knew little about Tibet and Buddhism. Hosting the monks became an incredible adventure as Suzanne and John maneuvered through unchartered waters. Their
friends said this was an opportunity for them to step out of their comfort zone. Upon reflection, it was more accurate to say they stepped into a comfort
zone. When the monks entered their home, they also stepped into their hearts. Being in the company of these Tibetan monks was a life-changing experience.
Suzanne and John were – and continue to be – overwhelmed with gratitude for having been placed in a circumstance where this experience literally came
through their front door.

Many color photographs help to tell the story of this wonderfully unexpected cultural experience.

All proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to the work of the Gaden Jangtse Monastery in India, where the monks reside, and Merging Hearts
Holistic Center, the organization that sponsored the monks during their stay in Canton, Ohio.

Fatal Vision: A True Crime Classic, by Joe McGinniss

Fatal Vision is the electrifying true story of Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald, the handsome, Princeton-educated physician convicted of savagely slaying his young pregnant wife and two small children, murders he vehemently denies committing.

Bestselling author Joe McGinniss chronicles every aspect of this horrifying and intricate crime, and probes the life and psyche of the magnetic, all-American Jeffrey MacDonald, a golden boy who seemed destined to have it all. The result is a penetration to the heart of darkness that enshrouded one of the most complex criminal cases ever to capture the attention of the American public. It is a haunting, stunningly suspenseful work that no reader will be able to forget.

Why MacDonald makes Us doubt
By J. Nelson
Joe McGuinnis has done an amazing job writing a book that is honest and has certainly withstood the test of time.
I have read everything on this case and what stands out for me is the hold this has on almost anyone who chooses to become aware of the story. I completely understand Mr McGuinnises feelings about Jeffrey MacDonald....the questions one askes : if he did this how can I like him? The doubt one might have, even in the face of so much physical proof.
It is not the facts which cause one to doubt MacDonalds guilt.......it is MacDonald himself. It is our faith in ourselves and our own goodness which causes us to doubt that he could be guilty of such a thing.
Rod Stewart sings a song with the lyrics:
If i listen long enough to you,
Ill find a way to believe that its all true.
Knowin that you lied ,straight faced, while I cried.
Still I look to find a reason to believe.
And that is the thing about jeffrey MacDonald, he is the kindof guy who makes you look to find a reason to believe he is innocent. So much about him appears , at least on the surface, like us. So much about him looks good, looks in some cases, even better then us.
After reading Fatal Vision I realized I know Collette MacDonald and what went on in the MacDonald family much more. Throughout the book Jeff MacDonald gives examples where he, in a sense, abandons his wife and children. He leaves her living at his parents home while he works and goes to school. He leaves her while he is working and in medical school, he doesnt attend the birth of their 2nd child, he joins the army, he joins the Green Berets, he joins the boxing team.....all things that will take him away from his wife and family. What wife would be happy about that? He is constantly telling Collette I am leaving you alone. I have work, i have friends, I have an activity. He often has more then one job. When there is a chance for he and Collette and the children to be alone and have family time Jeff invites people over; the neighbors, his friends, family. On Valentines day before the murders Jeff had a friend of his over to the house. What wife wants to spend Valentines day with her husbands friend?? There is also an example of a holiday where Collette was preparing a huge dinner and Jeff wanted to invite the neighbors over. Collette clearly told him no and he did it anyway and ruined her dinner. Hours of her hard work and the love put into a family dinner is ruined by him. Do people really believe she didnt FEEL the blatent disregard for her in that?? He bought a pony. Everyone likes to believe this pony is a grand gesture. Why would a mother with 3 small children under the age of 6 , who will be alone and saddled with the responsibilities of a home, wish to take on the responsiblity of a pony??? Again Collette is completely disregarded. Collette loved MacDonald , of that i am certain. Because she asked for so little from him emotionally. And its very clear she got nothing.
MacDonalds mother also says that she never saw any cruelty in her son. I beg to differ. I see cruelty when a husband invites a friend over for Valentines day instead of giving the evening to his wife in appreciation for her love and devotion. I see cruelty when instead of protecting the thought, love, and time that went into a holiday dinner his wife is preparing he invites people over who are not family and devalues his wifes efforts. I see cruelty when his wife, who needs a C section, which is major surgery, and he leaves her bedside, the hospital having her to go through it alone. He was a doctor. Any doctor knows with surgery there is a risk of death. He apparently didnt care and this was conveyed to Collette. In addition to all this.....are the betrayals....the numerous women he slept with. He had no time for his wife or family, but he somehow made time for them. In the book he says she may have known about the stewrdess......he thinks nothing of this, yet anyone who has ever been cheated on can tell you.....one stewardess is one too many. The pain of one is tremendous.

I know MacDonald. I went out with someone just like him. A golden boy on the outside. To this day a golden boy. Most would find it difficult to believe what this person is like behind closed doors. Except those who are VERY close to him. The thing is, so few people are emotionally close to him. Like MacDonald, he has a million friends and yet no truely close friend who KNOWS him. Like MacDonald he will tell you anything. Like MacDonald he is obsessed with his image of golden boy and will say and do anything to keep that image. Like MacDonald he is a liar, a manipulator, a fake. He is an ape. He mimics emotion and caring, but feels nothing for others. His currency is praise and admiration, he feeds off it like it was food. In McGuinesses book Collette wrote MacDonald a letter in the very beginning. In it she signs by saying she adores him. I was shocked, because my friend was told the same thing by me and I used those exact words....I adore you. His comment? I like that. I like those words you used....no one has ever said that to me before. So I know why MacDonald kept that particular letter. Collette adored him. We all know that means she loved him. But for MacDonald ....it meant he was a god.

This is a detailed book in the true crime genre, nearly 1,000 pages. But a case that spans over a decade, along with biographical descriptions of the victims (dead and living) is bound to be long. I became interested in this because of the recent attention on this case.

The book is not a hatchet job on Jeffrey MacDonald. His actions and words are sufficient to draw negative conclusions about his character. As charismatic as he seems to be, when attention about him becomes negative, he responds in very non-charismatic fashion. Repeatedly. Uncontrollably. Without fail. In MacDonald's mind, he appears to be the center of the universe and worthy of awe.

It took me about 10 days to get through the book. At no time was I tempted to move on to other reading. But it is long. If McGinniss had left out any part of the book, it could be regarded as selectively anti-MacDonald. MacDonald's improbable explanation of the murders (complete strangers, hippies on LSD, who just collectively decided to violently murder a pregnant woman and two young girls while leaving the Green Beret relatively unscathed) is a far reach even for those who would like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Right where he needs to be
By Deanna Dinielli
Couldn't put it down. I read this and A Wilderness of Error, both with an open mind, and I have to say the case against MacDonald is strong. He did it. Helena Stoeckley was a drug addict who admitted she could not remember if she was present and at other times was sure she was, and expressed fear of the defense counsel due to their threats against her. She was confused. Her brain was fried. All the people who came to MacDonald's defense and said he couldn't possibly have done it because he was such a great guy don't understand that psychopaths can pull the wool over the eyes of even their closest loved ones, even mental health professionals. He had motive, he wanted to be free to live the single life without Colette and fatherhood getting in the way. Most importantly, the forensic evidence was damning.

Struwwelpeter in English Translation (Dover Children's Classics), by Heinrich Hoffmann

First published in 1845. Struwwelpeter (variously translated as "slovenly" or "shock-headed" Peter) has become widely recognized as one of the most popular and influential children's books ever written. Heinrich Hoffmann was a Frankfurt physician. Unhappy with the dry and pedagogic books available for children at the time, he wrote and illustrated Struwwelpeter as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son. The book relates in verse and pictures the often gruesome consequences that befall children who torment animals, play with matches, suck their thumbs, refuse to eat, fidget at meals, etc.
Written in rhyming couplets and illustrated by the author, the book was an immediate success. It has since gone through hundreds of editions and been published in almost every European language. The present volume reprints 25 color plates from a German edition (including a bonus plate done for the 100th edition in 1876) with the reset text of a standard English translation. Also included are the full German text and an afterword with a brief biography of the author and note on how the book came to be written.
Children, bibliophiles, antiquarians—any lover of time-honored tales for children—will welcome this new edition of the classic German story.Content is optimized for tablet.

They don't write them like this anymore (m)
By A Customer
My mother & I were both raised on this book. It didn't scare us because the horrid, nasty things were all happening to children who were being particularly bad, and the so-called violence was as unrealistic as the witch eating Hansel & Gretel. Even a small child can distinguish these "tall tales" from reality. I will admit, that we grew up to be particularly law-abiding adults. Maybe there is a connection.

A Grim Delight
By Paula E. Harris
I read this little gem in 4th grade--my best friend stumbled across it somehow and showed it to me and we were both fascinated and disgusted (and a little frightened) by the stories and, more directly, by the charmingly rustic drawings. The now infamous story of Little Suck-a-Thumb made us both very relieved that we were, neither one, thumb-suckers. (the Red Long-Legged Scissor Man haunts me to this day...such a vivid and menacing figure, doncha think?) With Augustus--many modern women wish it were so easy to "become a little string". And as far as Harriet and the matches--I only wish my kitties would cry for me as Harriet's did...But I recommend this book heartily for adults who love the grim aspects of the Grimm fairy tales and anyone who liked the any Victorian/Edwardian "fairy stories" as a child (the original "Little Black Sambo" is another good vintage child's book...anyone reading it will see the racial aspects of the book are virtually non-existent. It only makes me hungry for pancakes!). Parental cautions? I am buying this for not only me but for my 7-month-old daughter. As to whether she will get to read it or not...well, I dunno. I think I will also buy a copy of "Peter Rabbit" as well. Mr MacGregor is a little less scary than the nasty red-long-legged Scissor Man.

There's a lesson in this....
By Olly Buxton
It's hard not to burst into xenophobic raptures when contemplating this bizarre little book. I mean, where else could a children's book of such an austere and humourless moral tone have originated than nineteenth century Germany? Have you heard the story of Harriet who played with matches? She BURNS TO DEATH! What should happen to naughty Conrad who sucks his thumbs when his mother isn't looking? The Long Legged Scissor Man leaps out of a door and CUTS HIS THUMBS OFF WITH A HUGE PAIR OF SHEARS, OF COURSE! And what of Augustus, who wouldn't eat his soup? HE STARVES TO DEATH! Naturally!

The only thing more ghastly than reading this to your lovely child as she or he is tucked up in bed is reading it in the original German: fear not if you don't understand German; in fact it's even better that way: far more scary!

And all illustrated in the most grotesque fashion, sure to surprise, delight and permanently derange even the most pleasantly disposed child.

Well, it never did me any harm...

Olly Buxton

A Nest Full of Eggs (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1), by Priscilla Belz Jenkins

Named a Best Children's Science Book of the Year by Science Books & Films, this classic picture book follows a full year of growth and change for robins: how the birds develop inside their eggs during the spring; how they mature into fledglings in the summer; how they learn to fly in the fall; and how they leave for warmer climates in winter—only to return when spring comes around again.

Now rebranded with a new cover look, this book features rich vocabulary and beautiful spreads detailing different bird habitats and feather types. Both text and artwork were vetted for accuracy by Dr. Charles Walcott, Professor Emeritus of Neurobiology and Behavior and former director of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

This is a Level 1 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out, which means the book explores introductory concepts perfect for children in the primary grades and supports the Common Core Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Let's-Read-and-Find-Out is the winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2?A young boy and girl observe the activities of a robin family from the first "cheer-up" call of spring, through nest building, hatching, and fledging. Additional information about other kinds of birds and their behaviors is touched upon. One double-spread shows development within the egg. The format is open and inviting with illustrations that have child appeal. However, the colors appear rather flat and washed out, lacking the exuberance one associates with the season. An adequate accompaniment to Barrie Watts's Birds' Nest (Silver Burdett, 1991), a photographic presentation of the nesting season of the blue titmouse.?Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJ

From Booklist
Gr. 1^-3. More complex than most stage-one books in the Let's Read-and-Find-Out series, this begins with a pair of American robins building a nest in a suburban garden. Two kids watch the nest and see the eggs hatch out and the babies learn to fly. At the same time they read about birds in all kinds of places. The book-within-a-book may be a bit confusing for early readers, but the cheerful pencil-and-watercolor illustrations are clear and informative. With an adult's help, younger readers will be stimulated to look carefully at the nest building in their own neighborhoods and to learn about what happens inside each egg. Hazel Rochman

What's inside that pretty blue egg?

A baby bird is growing inside that egg. Slowly the bird develops, until one day it cracks through the shell. Safe inside the nest, under the care of its parents, the chick grows stronger. Soon it will learn how to fly and take care of itself. By next spring it will be ready to build its own nest and raise chicks of its own.

A Nest Full of Eggs
By A Customer
My 5 year old son and I found this to be a very enjoyable book. I appreciate this book because it is so informative, yet reads more like a story than a textbook. The story begins in the Spring as the robin builds her nest and lays her eggs. It continues as the eggs hatch, and the birds grow up. The story closes as the birds leave in late September and explains that they will return the next Spring. I feel this "Full Circle" approach is very helpful to young learners. All throughout the book this story uses new words for children to learn and very naturally weaves the definitions into the story. The illustrations are a tremendous asset as they help to reinforce the new words. There are several processes shown step by step such as the development within an egg and the building of a nest. They are clearly and delightfully explained and also very well illustrated. I sometimes come across a children's book that captures my attention, yet fails to interest my son. What value does such a book have it it fails to reach the audience it was written for? I find this is not the problem with "A Nest Full of Eggs" as it is entertaining for both adults and children, while having the substance adults would like to teach to children. It is written for children yet does not talk down to them. This book is a part of a larger series called,"Let's read and Find out Science". I have also enjoyed reading others in the series and would highly recommend investigating this series.

Delightful find for my 3yr old
By H. Green
I don't even know how this book got into our small collection, but my almost 4 yr old daughter was immediately captivated by the story-like narrative of how robins make a nest, lay eggs, develop, hatch and learn to fly. Also, it shows the feather of about 20 birds, pictures of them around the world, about 8 different eggs and 10 different places birds make nests (including a floating nest!) I thought these lists/iterations would leave her bored, but now I can't get past them. She wants to know them all and tries to guess when I ask her which is which. I am very impressed by the simplicity of the narrative and illustrations in this book - perfect for little minds to keep focused on. I will be looking out for other books in this series.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–Well-written books that do an excellent job of introducing these topics. Transportation covers the wheel, sail, steam engine, internal combustion engine, and airplane. Food discusses canning, pasteurization, refrigeration, supermarkets, and genetically modified foods. Everyday Life explores fireplaces and central heating, indoor plumbing, the washing machine, food and clothing production, and microwave ovens. Each title presents information about daily living from ancient times to the present, explaining the need for improvements and how a given invention changed the quality of life for the better. The text, printed on a sea-foam green background, is breezy but informative; unfamiliar terms are defined. Illustrations are a mixture of period black-and-white and color photos. An illustrated time line runs along the bottom of the pages. Each volume concludes with an epilogue and another time line. Though these are far from definitive works, students will find them interesting. Teachers will find that the books correlate well with social-studies units.–Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS
