Top of the World focuses on the Boston Celtics' remarkable move from worst to first in 2008. The book really focuses on the 16 months that helped shape the new Celtics team. Starting from the disappointment of the draft and moving through each notable move made by the organization the author provides additional insights into the people who made it happen. I especially enjoyed learning about the players who aren't quite as high profile including Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Leon Powe, and Eddie House. The reader is given the complete picture of the team's dynamic. A fun and easy read for Boston Celtics' fans.

A fantastic insight on the most incredible (even for fans!) turnaround case study in basketball! It truly shows how chemistry and commitment can work wonders! I would recommend it for management case studies on team effort and performance. Besides, having lived it from far away and after a sleepless night in the cold to buy the sought-after tickets of their Rome match with the Raptors, it was great to read how all that contributed to the fantastic and breathtaking ride to the Championship! A must-read for Celtics fans and team builders/facilitators!

A great read! Peter May does a very good job of covering the 2008 champion Boston Celtics. A fan of the Celtics myself I enjoyed how May covered most of the players that were on the team. The background of the big three Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen made the book that more interesting for me to read. He also touches on the backgrounds of Eddie House, James Posey and Kendrick Perkins. Its interesting to read how a team can go from being at the bottom one year and winning it all the next. Definitely recommend this book!

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.

Find this short read helped me understand how males and perhaps females, form their roles in the pecking order from alpha to subordinate. While this was based upon a story of growing up on the mean streets of New York, the experiences I had growing up in the Midwest were familiar on the school bus, the football field, or on the job.

After reading "Whatever It Takes" about the Harlem Children's Zone, I wanted to read more about its founder. This memoir explains how Canada's own experiences growing up poor, on a dangerous street in a NYC ghetto have helped shape his life and his approach to building HCZ. He describes his education - both in school and in the streets, and addresses the escalation of violence in these poverty-stricken communities. Though I think he'd love to get guns off the streets, he seems very realistic about the likelihood of that happening, pointing out that current gun control programs like buybacks won't work. He also describes the unintended consequences of "tough on crime" laws like mandatory sentencing. I was never shy about driving through bad neighborhoods in Chicago, and had my own strategies to deal with threats (stopping at red lights was optional for me, in some circumstances), but I now have a much better understanding of what he's dealing with in trying to lift families out of poverty and get their children safely through college. This book is essential reading for anybody who wants to work in a field addressing these problems, from social workers to educators to politicians, and all would do well to examine carefully what Canada is finding works - and what doesn't.

If you want to know how to save our children, how to make our schools better, how to change, grow and heal our communities, read Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence. Then get out of your chair, get in your car or on your bike or even on your skates, go to the nearest school, step inside and volunteer to help change the children's worlds.

Geoffrey Canada is the man behind the Harlem Project. His mind, his drive, his desire to help children, parents and the community made the Harlem project a reality. And Geoffrey Canada knows his audience; he lived in abject poverty, the son of a single mom in a neighborhood where value was assigned based on how well you fought.

Geoffrey Canada's approach points the way to saving all the children who live in neighborhoods owned and operated by drug dealers, drug users, robbers, muggers, burglars and rapists -- killers of every description. My take on his core thesis is you cannot change children who live in these communities just by working inside the 4 walls of a school; you MUST change the community, reach out to the parents, help them where they are so they can reach out and change their own worlds, one step at a time, one day at a time.
