Super Cute & Useful

I bought this for my baby that I'm expecting this month. I think it has a cute look and will have lots of info without being too thorough or aggressive to keep up with. I like the areas for photos, the way it's sectioned off, etc. I think it'll be the perfect snapshot of the beginning of her life to give to my daughter one day. Really looking forward to using it!

Fun book to document my son's first year!

This is such a fun book. There is a section for each month to talk about highlights and paste in a photo. Also there are sections about mommy and daddy, grandparents, life before baby, the hospital, coming home, christening, baby shower, ultrasound photos, firsts and some blank pages to write in whatever you want. I love how there are checkboxes and writing prompts instead of just blank pages to journal in. I was able to complete a lot of the book in a couple hours while on maternity leave. Now I just go into the book once a month and write for 5 minutes and post a photo and I'm done which is so nice! The book is hardcover and spiral bound. There is lots of space to tape in bigger items like hospital bracelets and you can still close the book nicely.

Wonderful Baby Book!

This book has been so fun and easy to use. My baby girl is almost 9 months already and the pages are so easy to fill out that I haven't missed writing down a single event. I love keepsakes and memory stuff, but I'm terrible at journaling and scrap booking. This book is perfect cause it captures all the important details without taking up too much time or effort. Bonus is that it's gender neutral and still really cute.

It has a short section for pregnancy and birth stuff (baby shower, family history, the birth and the first couple weeks)

Then the next section is for the first year. There's a spot for a picture from that month and stats and other details can be written below. At 3, 6 and 12 months they have an extra section called exclusive interview where you can go into a little more detail about that stage of their life. (sample questions - What's the best piece of parenting advice you've received so far? Have you been having date nights yet? What are some of your favorite things to do together?) The section ends with 4 1/2 pages for 12 months and birthday information and pictures.

The third and final section is the gallery of firsts where it has a separate page for a picture and details about the event. Some of these include: holidays, seasons, bath, first words, first big trip. And then pages to jot down the dates next to milestones such as: First time playing peek-a-boo, first time giving a kiss, first time crawled, first steps, first time eating solid food, first words, first tooth (although there isn't a tooth chart :( )first laugh and lots lots more!

The book ends with a couple pages where mom and dad can write a letter to baby. And then a page for baby to write in when they are all grown up.

You will not be disappointed with this book! So fun. So easy to use. And memories that will last a lifetime.

A very welcome, intuitive approach to topology

Many of the standard introductions to Topology (Munkres comes to mind) focus more on the logical flow of the material, and less on the motivation for the material. This book focuses on the motivation, but after the first few chapters, the logical development is sound too.

The Armstrong book starts out with some fairly advanced concepts, outlining some interesting topological results before giving the modern definition of topological spaces in terms of open sets. Typically, authors give the open set definition of a Topology at the outset, before explaining what topology really is, and without explaining why that definition is used or how it was developed. Armstrong instead shows the historical motivation of the subject, and actually leads the reader through this development, starting with the less elegant but more intuitive definition of spaces in terms of neighborhoods. The equivalent open set definition is then taken in chapter two. However, once things get going, this book does not move slowly at all--quotient spaces and the fundamental group are presented early and covered in depth, and it is not long before the reader encounters genuinely advanced material, in rigorous form.

It's true that this book doesn't cover the same amount of raw material that a book like the Munkres does, and it's true that the book does not follow the most concise logical order, but it offers history, motivation, and initial exposure to more interesting results. Perhaps more importantly, it develops the reader's intuition. In many ways, this book is a complement to the Munkres, and an enthusiastic self-learner would benefit greatly from using both books simultaneously.

At the same time, this book does get into some more advanced topics. It has a particularly clear exposition of simplicial homology. My last word of praise about this book is that although it gives lots of motivation, it is still very concise. I think it's hard to go wrong with this book.

Valuable, and generally pleasant, introduction to topology

I can see how this book has left very few people happy. To generalize broadly, one often finds two types of reviewers of math books on Amazon: those who find the text too difficult, and denounce it; and those who implicitly denounce the first group by means of vigorous support of the book in question. Typically this latter group goes on to write reviews of books *supported* by the first group in which they denounce the excessive "hand-holding," the pandering to the reader's "intuition," and the general attempts to make the material accessible.

This book, however, manages to both require a non-trivial amount of effort and sophistication from the reader (thus alienating the first group), all while also appealing to intuition and giving large numbers of examples (thus alienating the second).

The following example should make the author's approach clear. On several occasions, Armstrong gives a non-standard definition of an idea. This is usually a definition that is more intuitive (to the beginner), but which is harder to use to complete proofs. This non-standard definition is followed by the standard definition, and the equivalence of both formulations is established. This is the case with connectedness, for instance. First, connectedness is defined by appealing to the idea that a space "should be one piece," leading to the formulation that whenever a connected topological space is decomposed into two subsets, the intersection of the closure of one of these sets with the other set is always nonempty. Soon thereafter, the standard formulation (the formulation which one almost always uses to actually write proofs) is introduced and established as equivalent, namely that a connected topological space is one in which the only sets that are both open and closed are the entire space itself and the empty set.

It is true that this approach makes for a bad reference book. It is also certainly not the most elegant and streamlined presentation. But the book is clearly not meant to be a reference or to be a showcase of exceptional concision and elegance. It is meant to be a book to learn from. Adding to this, the chapters are all full of examples, many of them quite interesting.

I will concede that the writing and layout can be irritating at times. In particular, as has been pointed out many times before, the author does not isolate and highlight all definitions and corollaries. So this adds to the difficulty of using the book as a reference, and it even makes it somewhat unpleasant to read as a learning text at times. But to say that the author does not define things is simply wrong. (In the first chapter the author sketches an overview of the material contained in the text, and it consequently does not contain many formal definitions or proofs. By and large, however, all subsequent chapters are independent of this chapter. All and all, I thought this was a good first topology text. You are always given good examples to chew on while you are sorting out the technicalities. The problems are also generally good. While many are fairly straightforward, I have found that they are almost all at least thought provoking, and some develop new material entirely. And there are more than a handful of difficult ones.

Finally, it should be emphasized that one can realistically be introduced to the rudiments of wide range of topics in a single semester: general topology, identification spaces, topological groups, the fundamental group, triangulations (including Seifert-Van Kampen), and simplicial homology. (To be clear, the book contains more than that, but I am only outlining what could be done in about 13 weeks.) Moreover, unlike some texts which are only meant to give the flavor of a subject to undergraduates, I have found that the foundations set by this books were substantial enough to build on.

Needlessly Obtuse

I'm quick to praise textbooks. I've written fan mail to authors of texts that I've truly loved. I keep those books in a special place on my shelf, and treasure them the way one might a favorite movie, or a beloved single malt. Armstrong's Topology is not among those treasured books.

There are four main complaints I have with this text:

-There are not enough diagrams to go with the provided examples. I understand there are space constraints, but this book is practically a pamphlet, and there is room for twice as many pictures. Topology is visual, and Armstrong does the reader a disservice by skimping on the graphics.

-The majority of the book is a wall of text, and it is impossible to reference prior results in less than 30 seconds. An attentive reader should be able to turn right to any previous result immediately, especially for such a tiny textbook.

-There is almost no expository material. Whereas Munkres takes care to introduce every single concept that will be discussed before jumping into the actual topological content, Armstrong just throws terms -- and worse, notation -- out there. An "Undergraduate Text in Mathematics" should be more thorough than this.

-Armstrong makes excessive appeals to obviousness. This sort of technical writing is the fastest way to leave a reader feeling helpless and insulted. (It's also a good way to make readers who 'get it' feel in on the joke, which I think partially explains the polarizing effect this book has.)

There are some things I like:

-The pictures that are included are top-notch.

-The introductory section which uses Euler's Polyhedron Formula to motivate future results is exceptional. I remember how sunny I felt about the rest of the book after reading it...

Honestly, though, Munkres' book is more extensive, and friendlier. Read that if you have any choice in the matter.

Good...Spoilers

I liked this one. I felt badly for Lily. I am glad that Kit realized how stupid he had been and I wish he would have had to work for Lily's love again. She just let him apologize, though heartfelt, and she forgave him. He treated her like crap. He took her virginity in the woods, which was fine because she loved him, but then was rude and dismissive towards her. Then he ignored her until he found out she was pregnant. She always believed in him and had faith that their love was real but at the first test, he believed another over her. I mean, he even said that he believed her dad because he did not know the man would lie like Lily did. I say, he did know Lily and apparently thought so little of the woman he said he loved. Who cares if you do not know the person telling you a harsh lie about the woman you love? That should make you believe them less not more!!! He was an idiot and I do not like that Lily knew he knew what he was doing when they made love the first time. He was in love with her for years and left her over a lie. She was waiting for him and what was he doing...sleeping around??? Classless and disgraceful man. I did like their story but he should have had to BEG for her. I also like how this author does not menion the numerous women her heroes have possibly been with. It makes it better to read about their love for their heroines without hearing that they are rakes or womanizers!!!

I Just Can't Get Enough of This Series!!

Oh my dear Anie Michaels, I'm starting to think that you could write a grocery list and I'd want to read it. Private Getaway picks up right where Private Encounters finishes, so we don't miss a moment in all the delicious angst and roller coaster feelings. For someone who has hated serials since she discovered them, I am certainly hooked and starting to be made a believer!

“Just because I can’t see your sand, doesn’t mean it’s any less important than mine.”

The thing I loved about this installment was that readers really got to see this whole other side to Lena. She was no longer the housewife waiting to get what was owed to her. She's forced to become independent and not lean on anyone from support. We find her starting over from square one but it felt special. It felt like this woman was maturing and growing in a way because she had no other choice. Furthermore, I absolutely adored that she didn't just crumple into a heap when something happened. She thought through everything and really trusted her own gut. I also love the introductions to her friends that we got. In a way, it showed the type of woman she is which endeared me to her character even further.

“I wanted to save you, to be with you, to help you. But I also wanted to give myself to you. I wanted everything with you.”

Once the book got rolling, I pretty much figured out what the end game was, but appreciated the journey nonetheless. It's hard to write the review without giving any spoilers, but I can say that I enjoyed this one immensely. Where the previous books were about Lena with someone else and the woman they shaped her to be, Private Getaway was all about the relationship she forms with herself. Normally, I stay clear of the serials but Michaels creates such natural ups and downs in the greater arc that it creates a naturalistic flow of breaks, making the serial a very organic one. Most of all, I’m thanking Michaels for not writing a nasty cliffhanger like the previous book, but definitely intrigued to where she'll take us next!

The ending is my favorite part!

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

I've really enjoyed reading these serials. in this third installment we find Lena on her own in Hawaii looking for a fresh start. Feeling like a fool for marrying her husband and falling in love with a liar - her PI. Lots of twists and turns in these books. For this third one - what really did it for me for the five stars is the ending.

Before we get there we have to work through Lena making a couple of friends and finding a new job. This is a tedious process as she's learning to trust and live a little. The money she has to live off of is not going to last forever and she's willing to start and the bottom and work way up. Something she's never had to do before.

There's a few surprises for Lena during this story. Again, the ending is my favorite part. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next for Lena. She's a tough cooking. She's struggled a bit but kept her chin up which is more than some can say if they'd experienced their whole world dropping out from under them.

I am starting off with AAAH why can't I give more than 5 stars?!? I love this series so much! I love Lena and I want to be her friend! I was so peed off at the end of Encounters, I mean really? Why'd you go there Anie?!? But of course she redeemed herself in this book. Lena just needs to move on and just when she thinks she can her world is turned upside down AGAIN!! I was reading so dang fast, I needed her to be happy, to get over the heartache of douche bag men.I knew something was going to happen..Preston needed to come out on the other side but how the heck was he gonna do that? I am so anxious to see what happens to Derrek. Anie did a fantastic job grabbing at me in and making me feel like I was a part of the story, like I was sitting right there with Lena and her friends. I can't wait to read what happens to everyone and hope that revenge is served. LOVED THIS BOOK!!

This book covers teeth replacement options whether it is bridges, dentures or implants. Of course, dental implants is the preferred way to go for comfortable lasting results. It is well written with a lot of good information. However, there are many "typos". It leaves the impression that it was dictated into a speech to text program and then not proof read. If you can wade throught the typos, it is quite informative.

To Live In Hearts We Leave Behind Is Not To Die

Mitch Albom pays homage to all mothers with this novel that beautifully shows the enduring power of a mother's love, a love so strong it can transcend even death. The moral of the story is not particularly original and not even handled in a unique way. But, grab the hankies and prepare to spend several hours reminiscing along with Chick Benetto about the things you wish you had done better with your own mother. Chick Benetto has hit rock bottom---divorced, alcoholic, has-been baseball player, and now comes the ultimate slap-in-the-face---his beloved daughter does not invite him to her wedding. After being shut out of the biggest day in his only child's life, Chick sees no point in continuing his miserable life and attempts suicide. But for his suicide he is drawn once again to Pepperville Beach, to the modest home where he grew up with his mom, dad, and sister. That is, until his dad deserted the family and life changed dramatically. The surprise for Chick is that his mom is still in the house. Intellectually, he knows she died ten years ago but here she is---cooking his food, sharing stories, giving advice.

The reader learns about all the times Chick's mom stood up for him and all the times he let her down. The writing is smooth and poignant, the memories both joyful and sad. If you have lost your own parents, the words will be doubly sad. But Chick has been given a very special gift: he learns that when someone is in your heart, they're never truly gone and they can come back to you, even at unlikely times. Chick has the unheard of luxury of being able to spend just one more day with his mother, having the chance to ask questions about things that have bothered him, finding out at last why his father left, and much more. How does it happen? Is this just another ghost story or a religious experience for non-believers? I think I shed the most tears when I realized at novel's end who was telling the story.

I think sentimental readers will find this one enjoyable and uplifting. So take it for what it is, a nostalgic trip back to childhood, that period of time that never lets you go, even when you're so wrecked it's hard to believe you ever were a child.

A Great Book for Healing After Loss

The first line I underlined when I started this book was: EVERY FAMILY IS A GHOST STORY. THE DEAD SIT AT OUR TABLES LONG AFTER THEY HAVE GONE.

The last line(s) I underlined at the end of the book were:

SHARING TALES OF THOSE WE'VE LOST IS HOW WE KEEP FROM REALLY LOSING THEM. ONE DAY SPENT WITH SOMEONE YOU LOVE CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING.

And so...based on these lines...you can get a feel for how any one person will relate if they've ever lost a loved one. I, personally, liked his TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE book much better--but this is worthy of reading just to find the precious lines within. ;)

Love your mother

By far, "Five People" is my favorite Mitch Albom book, but this book is worth a read. The other negative reviewers are missing the point, I think. Yes, the main character is a deflated, defeated, shell of a man, but that is precisely the point. The man is no hero....but again that is the crux of the story....how many of us are heroes? How many of us would like to reflect on our lives and maybe try and see things more clearly, try to better understand the choices we made, and the choices the people closest to us made? To understand the sacrifices people make for love?

Read the book, and then call your mother....if possible....if not, make peace in your heart..this book will help you do that.
