Making a librarian's dream come true: more books like this please!

I am a grade K-8 librarian and, as soon as I heard about this story, I had to purchase it for my school library. I was definitely not disappointed and I will admit to weeping slightly as I read this (though, I do tend to weep at most touching picture books, but that's another story).

Red can be read in many different ways. In it's simplistic form, it's merely about a crayon simply wanting to be itself without succumbing to the pressures of its family and peers. Children could easily view this as their intrinsic need to try and fail, all the while gain autonomy over their lives (fitting with Erikson's Psychosocial Stages).

On a more complex level, you can definitely see this book relating to the LGBQT community as well as dealing with the mental health issues related to being denied your true self (e.g. depression, feelings of "otherness", etc.). In fact, I believe the one-star reviewer saw this book only as a platform for the transgender community and not the many other possible moralities to this story (which prompted me to write this review).

From my brief experiments with the book and a survey of about 15 teachers and parents, adults seem to immediately see the crayon as a transgender person. They tend to overlook the crayon being blue on the inside and only see the red label at first (10ish/15 did not see a blue crayon - I say 10ish because one person had already read the book prior to my survey). Only when the crayon begins to struggle creating red pictures do they realize the crayon is, in fact, blue.

I have yet to "experiment" reading this with kids, but this week I plan on reading this to several classes of varying ages to get a sample of opinions. My hypothesis: most elementary students (K-5ish) will see the book as a powerful "coming of age" story about self-acceptance unless they have a prior relationship to the LGBQT community. I am very interested to read this book to classes where some of the students have same-gendered parents. I also think starting in grades 4/5, students might begin thinking there is more to the story and relate it to bigger ideas of morality, gender, and identity.

Read it to my students, want it for my own children!

I'm a preschool teacher, and our librarian suggested this book for our ongoing unit on color. I cried the first time I read it - I think we've all felt like Red at one point or another! It handles abstract and difficult concepts with text that is easy for young children to understand. A simple and beautiful story about celebrating who you truly are.

What a difference a label makes!

Summary: What happens when a blue crayon gets a red label? Everyone thinks he’s red. His teacher thinks he needs more practice, the scissors think his label is too tight (“One snip should do it”), his grandparents think he needs to wear a warm scarf. But no matter what he tries, it doesn’t work. He just can’t make those strawberries and hearts look the way they’re supposed to. Finally, he meets a new friend (Berry), who asks him to make an ocean for his boat. And it’s perfect!

Pros: This is a great story that kids can read at their own level of understanding. My first thought was that it was about gender identification, but it could be about embracing yourself in many different ways. School psychologists and social workers should definitely check this one out.

Cons: The first time I read this, the message seemed a little heavy-handed, but I don’t think kids would see it that way.

About the Author
A. W. Tozer (1897-1963) was an American Christian pastor, preacher, author, magazine editor, Bible conference speaker, and spiritual mentor. For his work, he received two honorary doctorate degrees. Among the more than 40 books that he authored, at least two are regarded as Christian classics: The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy. His books impress on the reader the possibility and necessity for a deeper relationship with God. Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, he and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, never owned a car, preferring bus and train travel. Even after becoming a well-known Christian author, Tozer signed away much of his royalties to those who were in need. Tozer had seven children, six boys and one girl. He was buried in Ellet Cemetery, Akron, Ohio, with a simple epitaph marking his grave: "A. W. Tozer - A Man of God." Prayer was of vital personal importance for Tozer. His preaching as well as his writings were but extensions of his prayer life. He had the ability to make his listeners face themselves in the light of what God was saying to them.

This book is probably the most spirit filled and guided work I've read in a long time. You can not help but hear the voice of God calling you to a deeper relationship with Him as you read this amazing classic. From begining to end each page is an impassioned plea for the reader to abandon "comfortable Christianity" in order to truly know God as He desires to be known. You can see right away that truly Mr. Tozer wrote this book on his knees. I found myself challenged to look at my own faith in Christ and what I should be doing with that faith in every chapter. Sometimes with weeping and confessing and always compelled to deep times of prayer and renewel in God's presence. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possesing Nothing" should be required reading for anyone confessing Christ as their Lord. I was totally blown away and my life with Christ and my own pursuit of God has been forever enriched. I have read this book over and over and shared much of it with friends and family. If you are "stuck" in you walk with the Lord, let the Spirit of God use this book to shake you loose and move you onward and upward.

A Book Saturated with God's Presence!

This is one of a few books I've read that, upon reading it, actually manifested God's presence. In line with the teaching of the book, God impressed upon me his love and his desire for a more intimate relationship. I broke into tears. Few books have had that impact. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing" is a profound call to absolute simplicity and abandonment to God who owns everything you may think you "possess", including yourself! Surrender it all to God and see what miracles will be wrought for His glory. Let God possess you! For those who want other recommendations, try "The Christian's Secret to a Happy Life" by Hannah Whitall Smith, "A Testament of Devotion" by Thomas Kelly, "Abandonment to Divine Providence" by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, "The Practice of the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence and, for those who want to experience God's holiness in a powerful way, "The Holiness of God" by R.C. Sproul. - Brad Clark

The Pursuit of God - made easier to know and practice.

Didn't realize that when they called this book a classic they really meant it. Many ideas and also clear direction to a more full walk with God (which, I think, is what we all really want). For the believer, God's "distance" is never the issue. It is only that we are to tune in to Him and the reassurance of His already immediate presence is known and felt by us. The idea of God's Throne in one's life (and there is room only for One on the throne at any time) is simplified. Yes, we want to walk with God. But remember it is He who reaches out to us before we can know Him in the first place. No wonder this book is so highly regarded.

One of Those Rare Books

Over the last fifteen years, a growing number of books have shown up in trade paperbackland on the subject of Buddhism. More seem to arrive daily, invited or not. Most of them are aimed at the general reader and beginning buddhist. This makes it progressively more difficult to sort out the superlative from the merely satisfactory.
Of all that I've read [and I've read them all] "Buddhism: Plain and Simple" stands out from the rest. Steve Hagen succeeds in one of the hardest tasks in writing: being straightforward without being dull; being concise without seeming frugal. No essential point of Buddhism is left uncovered, yet the author never pontificates or short-changes the reader.
The book is a gem of both inspiration and practicality. It takes a subject that often seems far too idealistic and places it at a level that resonates with the daily Western experience of life. It is a "quick read" without ever coming off as "Buddhism For Dummies." All this and at a price that will make it a convenient and affordable present for all those friends that have so often asked us, "what the heck is Buddhism?"
Find it, read it and buy another copy for someone you love. Better yet, give it to someone you don't love. It might just change their life.

The best book to get started in Buddhism

"~I am a newcomer to Buddhism, but when I get a hankering to learn about any subject, I read about it voraciously. This has been almost counter-productive in studying Buddhism since, as Hagen stresses, no words can really describe the reality we seek. In fact, I have read several books about Buddhism, Zen, and the like; but I own just two: Buddhism Plain and Simple, and Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh. By far, Hagen's book is my favorite.
the wrong reasons -- to control my emotions, to sort out moral dilemmas, and to find peace of mind. Through Buddhism, I've made great progress in all those areas by simply eliminating them as goals and just experiencing life moment by moment. This may sound odd if you haven't practiced Buddhism, but you will quickly appreciate this lesson after reading Hagen's book. You will discover that the practice of Buddhism does not involve traveling to the Himalayas or meditating in the forest. You will learn that you don't have to abandon your religion or your friends or your job. The word Buddhism stems from the Sanskrit word for Buddha, the awakened one. Buddhism is simply the path of awakening. This book is a wonderful guide on that path. You will not be the same after reading it.

The buddha-dharma

The best little book on Buddhism that is available. Masterfully written. This book needs to be studied, not just read. It is worthwhile to read again and again.� If you only read one book on Buddhism, then this is the one to read. The author is an American Zen teacher whose clarity of explanation will appeal to the American Zen student.
Steve Hagen prefers to call Buddhism "the buddha-dharma." He states that "It's a process, an awareness, an openness, a spirit of inquiry -- not a belief system, or even (as we normally understand it) a religion. It is more accurate to call it 'the teaching of the awakened,' or the buddha-dharma."
We start by learning the four truths: (1) life involves suffering; (2) this suffering arises within us; (3) we can end the most profound and existential forms of suffering; and (4) the way we end this suffering is by following the eightfold path. The existential angst we experience from the unanswered question of what life is about is at the heart of our suffering. The buddha-dharma is like a journey. By following the middle way we can reach enlightenment and nirvana.
There are three kinds of suffering, or duhkha: (1) pain, both physical and mental; (2) change; and (3) being. Our goal is to just see. We must awaken from our confusion. We need to see reality for what it is.
The eightfold path is a concrete way for us to practice bringing about the cessation of duhkha. The eight aspects of this path are right view, right intention, right speech, right action , right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right meditation.
Nothing in this book is offered as something you are to believe. Somehow through his life of contemplation the Buddha was able to formulate these notions. They are simply a guide. The Buddha can only point the way. It is left for each one of us to find the way for ourselves.

A great new series!

Dirty Thoughts is the first book in a new New Adult series from Megan Erickson, called the Mechanics of Love series. I love Megan Erickson, so I was extremely excited that she had a new series out, and I don't know why I was a little slow on the uptake, but I only realized who this series was about as soon as I started reading the book. Remember Max and Lea from Make it Right? Remember Max's yummy older brothers- Cal and Brent? The Mechanics of Love series is their stories! Super exciting, right?

Dirty Thoughts is Cal's story. And it is a really sexy, fun and beautiful second chance love story. Cal was totally head over heels in love with his high school girlfriend, Jenna, and the feelings were mutual. For reasons that are revealed pretty early on in the story, they break up and Jenna moves away for ten years. Well, now she is back and Cal and Jenna's chemistry is stronger than ever. Cal is a stubborn one, so there are lots of ups and downs between the two of them. Even when they weren't "together" you could tell they could hardly resist each other. I am such a sucker for a good second chance romance with out of the world chemistry. And Megan Erickson can write chemistry like whoa.

Dirty Thoughts is told in dual narrative between Cal and Jenna, which as you know is my favorite narrative method for books that feature a strong romance element. I was thinking that Dirty Thoughts was going to be wonderful second chance romance with witty banter and out of this world sexual chemistry- and it totally was- but Megan Erickson threw a wrench in my nice easy plot when Asher showed up. So who is Asher? What does this mean for Cal and his family? What about Jenna and Cal? I will let you find out. But you do know right off the bat that it will be a fun and sexy journey with excellent writing, characters and of course top notch romance. The mechanics of love series is going to be another homerun for sure. I love it already! Give me more Megan!

Delightful book!

The title, Dirty Thoughts, lead me to believe I was getting a smutty book. Instead, I discovered this delightful book of passion, family and second chances.

Oh my, I had a hard time putting this book down. As gruff and grumbly Cal is, I think he was just a giant teddy bear in need of a good hug. Sexy and hot as hell, he's been taking care of his family for so long, he just wanted to be by himself. Jenna was just so sweet and spunky but oh lordy, don't get her riled up. That girl does have a backbone when she pushed too hard. You put these two together and you can just watch candles melt with the heat and passion they have for each other. Unfortunately, the brain tends to rule the actions and Cal's was screaming 'No, not again' but his heart wanted something else.

The romance in this book is off the charts while Cal and Jenna work through their head issues. Actually while Cal worked through his issues. Jenna was ready to try. He just wanted to just live in his little house in the middle of nowhere with no demands on his heart or soul. Faith had another plan for him and watching him struggle while he worked out his past, present and future is what pulled me in. His interactions with his family were humorous as it only can be when there is a genuine love, and younger brothers! His family definitely was full of surprises and even second chances. Jenna's rich family, however, GRRR! Her mom and especially her brother I would just love to drop kick their sorry selfish butts into tomorrow. Really, why would someone so sweet escape from that family and then come back!

Over-all this was a wonderful story I can see myself reading again and again. The family dynamics pulled me in but it was the love that didn't die between Jenna and Cal that had me up all night reading. I've never read author Megan Erickson before and if Dirty Thoughts is indicative of her works, I know I'll be reading more. The book feels very complete and I'm more than happy on how it ends. But wait, there's more! It's a series. YAY! Brent gets the next book. Can't wait to see what happens Mr. Comedy. This book, this author, and this series will be a recommended read from me.

This one was okay. I wanted more of Cal and Jenna together and I also had some issues with the characters.

Dirty Thoughts is the first book in Megan Erickson's new Mechanics of Love series, which is a spin-off of her Bowler University series. Though the Bowler University books are NA, the Mechanics of Love series is a Contemporary series with each book being a standalone. You do not need to have read those books first in order to understand this series, but that is where the Payton brothers are first introduced.

Cal Payton and Jenna Macmillan love each other through high school and had their lives planned together, until one incident ruined everything for them. But when Jenna walks in to Cal's garage years later looking better than ever, Cal and Jenna are suddenly forced to face everything that they left behind. Though Cal and Jenna still feel the pull to one another and are more attracted to each other than ever, the differences that once separated them are still there. Cal has no intention of letting Jenna in again, but finds it harder and harder to stay away from her since she is back in town for good. Can Cal and Jenna have a second chance at love together, or will they find that their relationship is best left in the past.

Cal made it really hard for me to like him in this book, and I think that was a lot of my problem here. Cal was so hot and cold, and fully intent on pushing Jenna away until about 70% through the book. I don't typically mind a grumpy hero, because usually they start to soften a bit with the love of their heroine. But Cal drove me absolutely nuts, and couldn't seem to make up his mind. Jenna wasn't a bad heroine, but I did think that she put up with far too much as well. She had let her family push her around, and she let Cal continue to treat her the way he did and she never really stood up for herself. It got old, and it made it hard to really like her either. So while these two had clear chemistry and a history, I never really felt much of a connection between them.

My other big issue besides Cal and Jenna, was the fact that this story seemed to be more about Cal and his family than anything else. Because it focused so much on them, there wasn't much development between Cal and Jenna beyond his constant pushing her away. I did enjoy his family and seeing them together, but I wanted more about Cal and Jenna and seeing how they would move forward after everything that happened. This book seemed to be similar to other books I have read in the genre, with not much new or different here. It was frustrating and I found myself skimming because I didn't really care about the characters at that point. This isn't the first book that I have read from Megan Erickson, but it seems that there is something about her books that just doesn't typically work for me. While I think others might enjoy this book, I think her style might just be one that isn't for me.
