Dr. Simon Monk has a degree in Cybernetics and Computer Science and a PhD in Software Engineering. He spent several years as an academic before he returned to industry, co-founding the mobile software company Momote Ltd. Is this the REAL manual for Eagle?

Wow! I've learned to do something that I've wanted to do for a long time - make my own PC boards. I've been an electronics experimenter and radio amateur for decades and never made my own boards. I actually bought a set of chemicals once and did nothing with them. Even with programs like Eagle, I was still unsure, and the instructions were sometimes ambiguous.

So, to me, Dr. Monk has again done what he does so well. He's taken a complex subject and clarified it to the point where an amateur like me feels perfectly comfortable in giving it a try. That's my favorite thing about this book: It's clear step-by-step instructions and illustrations of how to do something new for the first time.

Bottom Line: If you've thought about making your own PC boards and had any hesitancy at all, you can now dive in. Get a copy of this book and go for it!

Simon Monk's Make Your Own PCBs with Eagle

Eagle is a wonder very powerful program for making electronic schematics and transforming that information into a finished printed circuit board design. Subsequently, that design can be sent to a vendor who specializes in manufacturing the finished PCB. The whole process is much less expensive than producing your own PCB due to the large amount of equipment and expertise required. The problem with Eagle for me in the past is that the documentation that goes with the program is difficult to understand. I was going around in circles for awhile until I read Simon Monk's great new book on the subject. He makes it very simple to use
Eagle, either to make schematics or to make PCB designs. The writing and graphics are wonderfully clear and shed light on the whole process. My questions have been answered and at last I am getting somewhere with Eagle. I recommend the book highly for beginners and advanced users alike.

Taking it to the next level...

Simon Monk has written several great books that teach about electrical components, simple circuits, and building your own projects. This new book takes that training to the next level. Chapter one begins with an intro to PCB's and helps you download EAGLE for the operating system of your choice. Dr. Monk then takes you through the entire process of making schematics, board layouts, and Gerber files. He explains each step of the process in detail and leads you through examples that are easy to understand but quite challenging as well. By the end of the book, you will have a very good understanding of the power of the EAGLE program and be able to create your own designs to submit for fabrication through a PCB service.
He finishes the book with an example of an Arduino shield and a Raspberry Pi expansion board. For programmers, he introduces how to use scripts and user language programs with EAGLE. This book is a great resource!

About the Author
Dr. Susie H. VanHuss is a distinguished professor emeritus of the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. She received her B.S. degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. Her teaching specialties include business communications, administrative systems, and personnel management. She is a prolific author (Cengage Learning), with textbooks in communications, keyboarding and word processing, office technology, and administrative management. Dr. VanHuss has experience managing large foundations and has served on the board of trustees of numerous for-profit and non-profit organizations. She is a frequent speaker at state, regional, and national business education conventions and has done extensive consulting and training for industry and education groups nationally and internationally.

Dr. Connie M. Forde is a full professor and head of the Department of Instructional Systems and Workforce Development at Mississippi State University, where she leads undergraduate programs in information technology services, business technology teacher education, and industrial technology, as well as graduate programs in instructional technology. Dr. Forde also continues to advise doctoral students on their dissertation research. Prior to her tenure at Mississippi State University, she was a business teacher at both the community college and secondary levels. She earned her B.S. and M.Ed. degrees in business education from the University of Southern Mississippi and her Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Forde serves as coauthor of the COLLEGE KEYBOARDING series and a variety of word processing and integrated applications textbooks and simulations. She is a recognized contributor to the professional literature and a speaker at state, regional, and national conferences. Additionally, she has served as president of the National Business Education Association, Southern Business Education Association, and National Council of Pi Omega Pi, and chair of the Foundation for the Future of Business Education.

Donna L. Woo is an instructor and department coordinator for Information Systems/Office Automation at Cypress College and associate director of education at Pacific College. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in business education from Michigan State University and earned her Ed.D. from Nova University. Her industry experience includes work for both IBM and General Motors. A respected author, Dr. Woo has written several word processing textbooks and has served as a coauthor on several editions of South-Western COLLEGE KEYBOARDING textbooks.

Vicki Robertson received her M.S. and B.S. degrees in education from the University of Memphis. She currently teaches at the University of Memphis and online for Southwest Community College. You Must love keyboarding

If your professor uses this with cengagebrain you need to buy Microsoft Word 13 for 1-55 or higher $$-$$$, the book $$$, and if you rent the book you still have to buy a product code for a mere $60. The three credt course ends up costing you about $600.00. The book is so not telling you that you that rental and permissions are for six months when the class is for four months, so they justify the cost of the rental because they only have a 6 month rental agreement. The book works hand in hand with one online site from what I have seen and makes it easy for the instructor to get your work. The online rental products do not come with a key code, but they do require you to have a key code for cengagebrain. Other online classes and book don't require such a set up or if they do the cost is 1/2 as much as what I had to pay to get this book in service. The book supports the class objectives so if you have to have this book compare the cost of owning it against renting it and the additional cost of upgrading your software to run the keyboarding progam setup.

The book is a great shape. It does explaining a lot of basic keyboarding and tips unfortunately I wasn't informed by the teacher until after that I needed the CD with the access code to be able to use it for class. I was able to save some money by buying this book and the code separately but I wish I would have been informed before. The seller is great and fast.

Shame on the seller of this book and Amazon for profiting so exhorbinately on the distressed situations experience by the late Ms. Mathews, is the seller aware that she set up a crowd funding account to try to help pay for her medical bills and that she refused money from the purple one to help with her bills as she saw such funds as ill-gotten monetary resources ?

Very Satisfying Conclusion(?)

I had finished the second book a few years ago but had no trouble getting sucked right back into the Wayward Pines world when I opened this up on my Kindle. In fact, for the first time in quite a while I found myself unable to put a book down. I didn't care that I had to work in the morning or that allergy medication had my eyelids begging for a break. I had to finish the book before I could do anything else. The pacing was great and I love the use of alternate POV's to keep the action going. I zipped through the first half of the book in about an hour as the action did not let up. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I will just say that I felt all loose ends from the previous two books were wrapped up nicely. If this is the end of the series, it is a good end. I do not feel like the reader was deprived of anything. The very last line definitely makes it possible for a continuation though.

Conclusion to the Wayward Pines Trilogy!

Well, I am not even sure where to start on reviewing this one! I never liked the performer's voice in this trilogy, so though I listened and read the Kindle versions, I much preferred reading to listening overall. And now that I know that the first season of the television show is based on this whole trilogy, I am looking forward to watching the whole thing now!

I like the way the characters continue to be developed here and I really liked the build-up with the relationships as well. All of the elements work so well together! But, I have to admit that this isn't the strongest book in the trilogy - the ending isn't as satisfying as I had hoped it would be... but I am definitely looking forward to reading more from Crouch in the future!

Some of the best science fiction I've read in years

Spoiler alert: do NOT read this book (or this review!) unless you have already read Pines and Wayward, the first two novels in the Wayward Pines trilogy. It makes no sense as a standalone story. Now, assuming that I’m not revealing any secrets, here’s how the novel opens . . .

Sheriff Ethan Burke is confronting the catastrophe he triggered when he told the people of Wayward Pines the truth about how and why they came to live in this seemingly idyllic little town. As we now know, the megalomaniac who built the place had kidnapped the people who became its residents. His name was David Pilcher. When Ethan defied him by disclosing his secrets, he reacted by cutting off all the power and other services to Wayward Pines. Even worse, Pilcher opened the gate to the outside world and cut off the power to the electrified fence that kept the carnivorous “abbies” away from the town. Wracked with guilt, Ethan now faces his greatest challenge. He must lead the townspeople to safety in the face of what will surely be a murderous invasion by hundreds if not thousands of abbies. If Ethan fails to act, it’s a certainty that the entire population will be eaten alive by invaders.

Working with his former Secret Service partner (and former lover), Kate Ballinger, Ethan organizes the people of Wayward Pines in an attempt to escape the abbies. Meanwhile, he forces his way into the vast artificial cavern carved into the mountain where Pilcher and his staff of 140 had maintained the services that kept the town functioning — and managed the universal surveillance system that intruded on even the most intimate moments of their lives.

As the abbies pour into town and devour those who insisted on returning to their homes, Ethan makes his way ever deeper into Pilcher’s mountain lair. There he learns that he and the survivors in town face an even greater challenge than surviving an invasion of monsters.

Like the two novels that preceded it in this trilogy, The Last Town is written with consummate skill. The story drives forward at a blistering pace, maintain suspense and surprise until the very end. This is a first-class science fiction thriller. There’s not a whole lot of that around.
