Perfect!

The entire plotline of both Midge the Neko and The Neko Baby is absolutely genius. It is completely original and I highly recommend reading this book and its prequel. S. Deanne Adams is an inspiring author who never fails to entertain myself and countless others and this story makes no exception.

This sequel to 'Midge the Neko' encompasses and shares Scott and Midge's journey into dealing with real life and the secret life of Neko. Their taste test at fatherhood is the most endearing thing that I have ever read. It is quite a bumpy ride, but I am so glad to recommend it. My Mom even loves it, and that is saying a lot! I am absolutely amazed at the talent that Deanne has to keep producing such quality work at an amazing speed. One million gold starts for you, Deanne, because you deserve them and so much more. :)

Disappointing.

I gave this a 2 because the plot really wasn't that great and the ending was bad, I'll be honest. I loved the first book there was a conflict in it that eventually got solved, but in this book the conflict with the mother and the neko baby wasn't made a huge part of the story until the very end. The end result seemed very rushed and the decision Scott and Midge made didn't make sense to me. The story was really disappointing.

The major strength of this book is its parallel presentation of key concepts of distributed computing using both DCOM and CORBA. The author shows how objects work under each standard and how to program with them using C++, Java, and Visual Basic (for DCOM only). (Short, useful code excerpts show the different programming techniques with each standard.) He explains how distributed computing works in general as well as the specifics and advantages of DCOM and CORBA for today's enterprise. (The basic differences remain--Microsoft is a proprietary standard with great development tools and little cross-platform support while CORBA is a strong cross-platform option with fewer options for development tools.) The Definite COM & CORBA Guide

Not only did "COM & CORBA Side by Side" did an excellent job of comparing COM & CORBA, it laid out a number of strategies to apply *both* technologies' strengths in designing and implementing your distributed system solutions. As Part 1 of the book is aptly titled, the book's overriding theme is embracing COM & CORBA to your advantage. Evolutionary background and current technology trends in distributed computing were covered thoroughly. Development issues on both client & server sides were given enough treatment to satisfy 2 groups of audience: developers who want to understand the implementation details & differences of COM & CORBA, and decision makers who need strategic information on the technology's main players and future directions.
However, the key to the entire book is Part 4 that covers COM & CORBA bridging strategies ranging from custom approaches (C++, JVM) to third-party commercial products (Visual Edge's ObjectBridge) to enterprise application servers that provide support for client & server components implemented with both COM & CORBA. This is probably the only COM & CORBA book currently available that provides comprehensive information on this topic. My only complaint is that only one commercial bridging product was covered in this section. I wish the author had spent more time on other third-party bridging solutions. Well, maybe that can be covered in a second edition.
The book is also logically laid out with executive summary before and after each chapter and major section. What I also like about the book's presentation is the example code are higlighted with light gray background, making it easy to distinguish between text & programming details. In all, it is refreshing to come across a book that promotes building solutions by harnessing the strengths of competing technologies and does a very good job at that with real code & examples.

A great book to keep for distributed computing

This is an amazing book which covers such a diverse field in distributed computing. This field is often confusing and sometimes even intimidating with many emerging technologies involving many programming languages and different platforms. Dr. Pritchard did an excellent job to bring much needed clarity in his book.
The book has a very good organization and it is very easy to follow. It starts with a brief discussion on the history and background of distributed objects with some fundamental concepts. It then presents a comprehensive and objective comparison of COM and COBRA on both server and client sides. The book is completed with the presentation of bridging techniques between COM and COBRA, enabling the two to interoperate and coexist in an enterprise system. Dr. Prichard apparently has applied both COM and COBRA in practical projects, and therefore he is able to share his past experiences in using these technologies. He offers many technical insights in the planning and assessment, design and architecture, as well as implementation details with code examples in C++, Java and VB. I enjoyed reading his strategy discussions the most. There are too many books on the market which are filled with codes and technical details. This is a rare book which puts an equal emphasis on planning and design strategies.
This book covers a variety of topics such as: MTS, MSMQ, ADO, ASP, OTS, JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans, just mentioning a few. Dr. Pritchard presents these topics in a concise yet clear fashion. I am truly amazed that he could present all these topics with such a clarity, illustrating his deep understanding on the subject. It is certainly a book to keep for anyone who is working on or planning an enterprise distributed object system with either COM or COBRA.

If you're in the process of architecting a new system or planning to rearchitect an existing system, this book will prove invaluable in helping you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Even if you're just interested in both technologies and want to dig deeper into each, this book is a sure bet!

The book is nice in that it puts all of the author's lessons ...

This looks to be a compilation of what the author has covered on his youtube channel and website. And as mentioned in another review - no link to them. The book is nice in that it puts all of the author's lessons and techniques into a single point of reference. I'm not 100% sure, but there just doesn't seem to be anything new here and therefore not worth the price I've paid for it, having already been through his youtube videos, and having purchased one of the authors training videos from his website a couple of years back. That very training video is now one of the projects in this book. I got to pay for it twice. Yay. The techniques covered here are addressed in many earlier publications. As an example - the FAD technique I first saw explained by Calvin Hollywood many years back, and also covered in Calvin's own video training is addressed in this book (and surely addressed earlier by someone else). At least he gives credit. No knock on the author and his talents, but I was (and still am) hoping for something new and perhaps a little more advanced. How many times are we going to see these same techniques and base level projects recycled with a new set of photos and a different author? I guess I'm just being a grump because I paid for the same info twice, lol.
A more advanced photo compositing and photo manipulation publication that included some start to finish projects like this book sure would be nice. Any suggestions?

If you haven't seen any of his videos, or been on Kelby's site, or gone through some other photo compositing books prior (Matt Kloskowski's comes to mind) - well then this is a good one to get started with. But if you have, my opinion is that you would have already seen these techniques and would therefore be disappointed.

Basic Introduction topics and simple composites

The book consits of two parts: Basics and several composites.
The basics are already covered by Glyns very good free youtube tutorials. Personaly I prefer those to the book. My point, however, is: There is no link to them. Which means that I have to search for them to get both versions. The explanation is good, though basic.
The composites are some of his works. They are simple enough for beginners and the files for those (but not the first part of the book) can be downloaded from the publisher. My complain here is: The real magic is in the details not in cuting out the persons. He explains what dodge and burn is in a few sentences and in the composites we are just told to do doge and burn to taste. Or to use Nik software if we want. That is ok for someone who is experienced with those topics - but that person does not need the first half of the book.

Summary: The book is ok. Nothing really new or special. My personal favorite is still Photoshop Compositing secrets, which covers more or less the same topics but in more detail - and has been around for years.

Image Asset Files?

The book seems to be well written by a Photoshop expert, but I'm afraid that many of the asset files needed to work through the projects in the book are lacking....errr missing. I went to peachpit to download the exercise files last night, clicked on the link and it was broken. I emailed peachpit and the files were added this morning. Working my way through the projects and get to the project on advanced blending and the first coffee image (figure 1.54) is included, but the second part of the project (main image in figure 1.53 needed to do most of the project) is missing from the downloaded files. Decided to venture into Chapter 2. Project files are missing from figures 2.24, 2.50, 2.66, and the entire transforming a location project. The information contained is great but not having the image files needed doesn't help much with learning the techniques.

But The Broken Sword has a complete-feeling ending that puts Arthur, his recovered knights, Beatrice, and Merlin happily in place for future victories.

This complex sequel to The Forever King (Tor, 1992) provides an unusual, creative blending of elements of reincarnation, witchcraft, magic, and Christianity without really being about any one of them. In it, King Arthur of Camelot and Merlin, reincarnated as a 20th-century teenager and an old man, rescue the Holy Grail from evil villains. Hal, the retired FBI agent of the first novel is also of assistance, as are the knights of the Round Table. An action-packed opening scene grabs readers' attention. However, this pace is not evenly maintained throughout. Although the difficult vocabulary can usually be understood in context, and the shifts in time back to the original Arthurian histories are usually clear, this novel will be most appreciated by more advanced readers. The increased amount of violence also necessitates a greater maturity level. Blind Beatrice can see only when she holds the Holy Grail she found in a market in Marrakesh. She becomes Arthur's companion, and the two return to America with the grail, pursued by an evil sorcerer. Arthur must choose whether to break Excalibur to protect Beatrice or fail in his attempt to restore the Round Table. This rollicking good contemporary fantasy adventure belongs in all fantasy collections.

A GREAT NOVEL!!

Murphy and Cochran have done themselves well with this novel. Although I liked The Forever King better, this novel also intrigued me.
First of all, let me list the few faults this novel had compared to the first one: it was a lot darker than the first novel, it had too much on the history of the characters, and it didn't even develop the evil character, Aubrey Katsuleris (Thanatos). Sure, he was developed in some way, but Cochran and Murphy could have taken out about 15 of the 70 or so historical pages involving Arthur and Taliesin, and put Katsuleris into it.
Next, the good things: it displayed Merlin's past, which is good in some ways, we got to see the knights come together again, the bad guy was a lot better in this one, and it was just so great! Worth reading, although I advise you all to read The Forever King before this one.

Incredible. One of the best re-tells of the Arthurian myth.

In "The Forever King" Cochran and Murphy created one of the most original re-interpretations of the Arthur legend. In "The Broken Sword" they continue the story of Arthur, Galahad, and Merlin and give a unique view of the less described elements of the legend - How did Merlin become a wizard? Why did no other Druid help Arthur? And most important of all, Where did the magic go? I fervently hope that the series is continued, as I would love to see how Arthur reclaims his throne.

A bit disappointing

After reading the truly wonderful "The Forever King", I could barely wait to delve into this sequel. After finishing the novel, I must admit that I felt some disappointment. The villian of the story is so similar to the villian in "The Forever King" that they might as well be clones. Arthur's Aunt Emily is barely in the story at all. Her brief appearance seems to hint at another sequel. A new character, Beatrice, is introduced. She spends most of the story in a hospital while Arthur stays at her bedside. The Knights of the Round Table are released from Camelot and join Hal on a quest to protect Arthur. The Knights are hopelessly outdated, and while this provides some great comic relief at first, the endless drinking and bar-wrecking become mind numbing.
The story once again revolves around a villian who is out to get the grail at any cost. I do hope that if Cochran & Murphy write another sequel, it will have a totally different plot and villian. I did like the book enough that I will buy the sequel if or when it is published, and I'll hope that it is as captivating as "The Forever King."
