About the Author
Jeff Hiatt is the president of Prosci Research and founder of the Change Management Learning Center. He is the author of the book Employee's Survival Guide to Change and co-author of Change Management: the people side of change. Jeff was a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories from 1985 to 1995 where he co-authored Winning with Quality, a story of business and quality improvement for one of AT&T's product divisions. After founding Prosci in 1996, he has led research in change management with more than 900 companies from 59 countries. People-centric Change Management

Text I bought as source for some Doctoral course wok. ADKAR is fine for "people centric" change management, but still follows the same old engineer based requirements, design, implement procedures. Prosci training is the "thing" which uses ADKAR as it's curriculum as Hiatt owns the company. In reality I've used parts of it in change management projects but have never followed it to the letter. It really depends on the organization.

The model for change...

Of all the formulations and processes for change management anyone can conceive of few can approach the simplicity of the ADKAR model. Simply put: ADKAR is Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability and Re-enforcement. It is a sequential process one building on the prior step until you move all the way through the model. Applying the model is just as straight forward. You wouldn't be successful in trying to get a group of employees to follow a different process if they are not walked through all of the required steps. Reflect back on when you were asked to do something in a new and different way. What comes to mind? If you asked, "Why are we doing this?," followed by, "What's in it for me?," you are getting the message clearly. I apply this model in all of my change and project management efforts as it does work. It is simple to use and simple to explain. If you wish to excel in management especially in the project and change management fields I recommend you read this book and apply the concepts. It is what I like to consider Change Management 101.

Since he died young...

...he didn't have time to truly live up to the promise expected of one brought up in privileged circumstances. He's known for his ancestry, who he married, how he died and his kingly son. As for his own behavior, he's remembered for his self delf destructive actions. The author gives us a fascinating portrait of a seventeenth century "bad boy" who stole the heart of a queen.

A favorite aspect of historical biographies is the depiction of social history. The detailed narrative on everyday life at Temple Newsam captured my attention such that I've purchased the guide book for a vicarious visit, or better yet to prepare for an "in person" version.

Darnley's mother is somewhat of a reminder of today's stereotypical "soccer mom" in raising her son to fulfill her own dream of the crown acheived by her tudor cousins. She paid dearly for it.

Darnley came to life for me, such that I felt empathy on occasion, while at other times I wanted to tell him to "man up" and take responsibity for his own life. I'm glad Ms. Bingham chose to write a biography of someone who is usually relagated to a chapter, or less, in a book on a better known figure. His is a story worth telling.

I bought this book mainly to read the background information about Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox (Darnley's mother). The book held my interest beyond Margaret's story in that it told a familiar tale from an unfamiliar point of view. Any student of Tudor and Stuart history knows the story of Darnley's murder - but usually events unfold from the point of view of Mary, Queen of Scots. Here, events are finally seen from Darnley's perspective. He still comes across as a thoroughly unpleasant fellow, but the reader can, at least, get an inkling of why he was what he was. I orignally considered this a throw away title, but it has earned a place in my Tudor library.

As a former McKinsey interviewer and career coach at the Tuck School of Business, I work with a great many students who are going through case interviews, whether for consulting jobs or for many other top companies.

For all of these candidates who have found out that they will have a case interview, their first question is always "where do I start?"

Often they have already bought one of the other popular (and excellent) case interview books, but they don't quite have a feel for what a case is or how they should get stuck into preparation.

This book is designed to be that starting point. Its first goal is to give a very clear example of actually what a case interview is. Once that is well understood, we then move onto learning about why interviewers use cases, what they are looking for, and accordingly what candidates should have in mind as they run through their own case prep.

My goal is that this book will be a useful add-on to the classic case books, and will be a valuable starting point.

About the Author
Stephen Pidgeon is a former McKinsey consultant and is currently Associate Director in the Career Development Office at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, which is consistently ranked amongst the World's top Business Schools.

In his role at Tuck, Stephen helps students get internships and full time positions in all of the World's top consulting companies; including McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte Consulting, and many more.

Each year, Stephen counsels more than a hundred students, helping them navigate the on-campus recruiting process, and coaching them to succeed in consulting case and experience interviews.
In addition, Stephen is one of the most sought-after interview coaches on Evisors.com, where he coaches students from around the World (including undergrad, MBA and other advanced degrees) and experienced hires.

Prior to working at Tuck, Stephen was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, based in the London office, during which time he served top leaders of many global organizations. He was particularly active as an interviewer, attending company presentations on campuses, mentoring candidates, and taking part in countless interviews and decision meetings.

Stephen received his MBA from the Tuck School of Business in 2007, where he successfully navigated the consulting recruiting process, receiving offers from two of the top consulting firms. He spent his summer internship with McKinsey & Company.

Stephen lives in Vermont with his wife and two daughters, and when he is not counseling students spends his time renovating his house or working in his backyard.

Case Interviews for Beginners is the ideal resource with which to begin your case prep. In typical consulting fashion, there are three reasons that you should start here:

1. Case Interviews for Beginners focuses on developing your problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities rather than emphasizing tedious frameworks or cryptic question sets. It includes several very helpful ideas for learning how to absorb, structure, analyze, and synthesize case questions.
2. The book is designed with the MBA time crunch in mind. It delivers a wealth of information in a very direct, actionable manner.
3. Although the book is perfectly capable of serving as a stand-alone resource, it does include a fairly thorough examination of the other case prep resources that are available in an effort to help you chart your case prep course more effectively.

Only case interview book you need!

This is the perfect book to demystify what case interviews are all about. Rather than inundating you with a ton of things to memorize and stress you out, this book provides you exactly what you need to get started with case interview preparation: a thorough understanding of what a case interview is, why consulting firms (and, increasingly, other companies) use them, and what a good case interview should look like.

With this book as my guide, I ended up with offers from two Big 3 firms as well as two other leading consulting firms. I highly recommend reading this book at the outset of your case preparation to get an overview of the process and format of interviews, and then returning to it again once you've gotten a few cases under your belt to revisit some of the nuances that Pidgeon points out that will help take your case interview performance to the next level.

Finally, it is written in a fun, conversational tone that makes a daunting topic approachable and also makes for a very enjoyable read.

Must read for case prep

Simply put, this book is the best possible thing you can read before starting to prepare for case interviews. Instead of throwing a bunch of frameworks at you before you really even understand how a case interview works, Pidgeon explains the process through a clear cut example, and then breaks it down into its component parts. He focuses on how to approach each of these parts as opposed to which framework to use when. Moreover, he touches on the intangibles of the case interview, which are quite possibly the most important part of a case.

Without a doubt, this book gives you more to remember for how to approach a case interview than any other case book out there. It is the only one I would read if I were about to start preparing for case interviews, and it will give you the foundation to begin preparing with real cases. Highly recommended.

Milbrath's informed common sense cuts through complexity

I've read a number of books that purport to clearly explain the ins and outs of environmentalism, but none come close to this little Socratic dialogue. Using a format of questions and answers with his neighbor, Milbrath (a professor at SUNY and longtime philosopher of environmental sanity) takes a leap beyond both strident rhetoric and turgid college text writing to provide a major public service. If this were published by a mainstream publisher, it'd be on the bestseller list.

Mandatory reading for all!

This little gem was sent to me by my cousin who is a research scientist at Mayo Clinic. I am eternally grateful! Each of my Environmental Science and Biology 1 students will now be reading it as part of their course work. Milbrath cuts to the chase in a dialogue that is easily understood by the layman. It is rather ironic -in the 1800's Chief Seattle spoke of "the end of living - the beginning of survival" ...Rachel Carson.....Lester Milbrath.... are we never going to hear the words and exercise the right? I would encourage all science teachers to make this book required reading! As Milbrath says, "Nature, life systems, and society are one; they have a common fate." Let's be eager to learn this TODAY! About the Author
Elwyn Berlekamp was born in Dover, Ohio, on September 6, 1940. After spending two years as Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and five years at the Bell Telephone laboratories, in 1971 he became Professor of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering-Computer Science at Berkeley.His book Algebraic Coding Theory received the best research paper award of the IEEE Information Theory Group. Eta Kappa Nu named him the "Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer" of 1971 in the U.S., and he has been President of the IEEE Information Theory Society. In 1977 he was elected to membership of the US National Academy of Engineering.

John Conway is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College and a former Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and is Reader in Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. He has held visiting professorships at several universities and has made original contributions to many branches of mathematics, notably transfinite arithmetic, the theory of knots, many-dimensional geometry and the theory of symmetry (group theory).

Richard Guy has taught mathematics at many levels and in many places-England, Singapore, India, Canada. Since 1965 he has been Professor of Mathematics at the University of Calgary and he is a member of the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of America.He edits the Unsolved Problems section of American Mathematical Monthly; he wrote the volume on Number Theory for the series:Unsolved Problems in Intuitive Mathematics and is preparing another on Combinators, Graph Theory, and Game Theory. He is a keen member of the Alpine Club of Canada.

that a book about real estate (creating FINANCIAL independence no less), both residential and COMMERCIAL, and covers no math, no numbers. How can a book even propose to teach you about real estate and not tell you how to evaluate it? Real estate, or any investment for that matter, is ALL about the numbers. The numbers it does include are so basic, anyone who tried to buy an apartment complex or commercial property using them would be slaughtered.

Great for the beginning investor!

This book does some things very well. It helps one decide whether real estate investment is right for them, it helps one to understand the benefits and/or drawbacks of investing in real estate, and it comprehensively describes the different types of real estate investments. Also, the processes and terminologies are all discussed in very understandable terms.
However, as with many real estate investment books, and perhaps understandably, it fails to go beyond the basics. If you are looking for a treatise on in-depth real estate investment analysis, this book probably is not for you.
With that said, it was a quick, fun, and inspiring read. I would certainly recommend it to someone is just starting out.

Growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950s Henry Hill aspired "to be a gangsterto be a wise guy." This book chronicles Hill's criminal successes beginning with his being a gofer for neighborhood mobster to his part in the 1978 $6-million Lufthansa Airlines robbery. Smuggling, hijacking, union racketeering, credit card fraud, robbery, bribery, drug dealing, prison, marriage, and assorted girlfriends take up most of Hill's time and this story. The author may have faithfully portrayed his subject but neither Hill nor any of his activities provokes much interest. The result is a plodding, episodic account which would have made a better magazine article than book. Hill's career ends with his becoming the ultimate wise guy as an informer under the Federal Witness Program. Jerry Maioli, Western Library Network, Olympia, Wash.

Terrific Book that Fills Holes and Fixes Errors in the Film

When I first began reading this book, I couldn't help but think, "I've already seen all this in the film." After a few chapters though, I was engrossed and satisfied at how much more comprehensive this book was compared to the film. Slightly more accurate too.

For those who don't know, this is the book upon which the film masterpiece "Goodfellas" was based. In both, we learn the story behind a low level mobster from his childhood and first encounter with a Luchese family crew, to his eventual arrest and state's evidence producing adult. Henry Hill always wanted to be a gangster, and when he went across the street to get a job at the local cab stand, his new "family" life began.

The book goes into quite a bit more detail than the film (common for novels-turned-movies) and sets the record straight on many facts, names, and places that were slightly (or sometimes greatly) altered in the name of better cinema. Yes, at times you will think you are reading the narration from the movie, and I even heard it in Ray Liotta's voice here and there, but if you liked the film, or have any interest in organized crime and its history, this is absolutely mandatory reading.

The story behind the giant "Luftansa heist" is completely mind-bending. The tales of how many mobsters avoided "hard time" in prison is really incredible. And of course, there is the moral of the story and the bottom line; once a mobster becomes a possible threat to his own "family," he is to be eliminated - no matter how close a friend or brother.

Read this book. It is a great companion to the film, and to the other books on mafia history.

Not-so-organized crime

Pileggi molds Henry Hill's life story into an unputdownable book that rings with authenticity. This is not one more self-serving account by an organized crime figure whose claim to book royalties is the heights to which he rose in ''this thing of ours'' before being forced by dishonorable associates to enter the Federal Witness Protection Program. Henry Hill is a find, a bona fide wise guy who generally ''earned'' at street level but who had unusual access to high-level crime bosses. In those parts of "Wise Guy" where Hill speaks for himself, he does so with the dispassionate voice of a born observer who prefers to describe the details and recall the prevailing mood rather than convince the reader of his own stand-up behavior. And Hill's story goes nonstop. We learn that the energy level and entrepreneurial drive required to be a successful wise guy is staggering. Organized crime may be one of the last bastions of the American work ethic.

Great read for fans of Goodfellas looking to go beyond the film.

I wanted to read Wise Guy for some more interaction with the characters and the story beyond the film Goodfellas, which is one of my favorite films. The book does not disappoint. It goes much further in depth into the details of Henry's life and career, and if you come to the novel after the film, it allows you to look through some of the dramatic liberties taken in the translation from book to screenplay. The fleshed-out descriptions of Henry's jail stints and the intricacies of his many schemes and heists are what make the novel most interesting because you get to see what really made these guys tick and how ingenius they really were, as opposed to the film which had to forego many such details for the sake of keeping the plot going. All in all, great way to continue experiencing the characters and story for a fan of Goodfellas.
