T. About the Author
Dr. David R. Anderson is a textbook author and Professor Emeritus of Quantitative Analysis in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati. He has served as head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management and as Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. He was also coordinator of the College's first Executive Program. In addition to introductory statistics for business students, Dr. Anderson has taught graduate-level courses in regression analysis, multivariate analysis, and management science. He also has taught statistical courses at the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Professor Anderson has received numerous honors for excellence in teaching and service to student organizations. He is the coauthor of ten textbooks related to decision sciences and actively consults with businesses in the areas of sampling and statistical methods. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he earned his BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Purdue University.

Dr. Dennis J. Sweeney is a textbook author, Professor Emeritus of Quantitative Analysis and founder of the Center for Productivity Improvement at the University of Cincinnati. He also served five years as head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and four years as Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. In addition, he has worked in the management science group at Procter & Gamble and has been a visiting professor at Duke University. Professor Sweeney has published more than 30 articles in the area of management science and statistics. The National Science Foundation, IBM, Procter & Gamble, Federated Department Stores, Kroger, and Cincinnati Gas & Electric have funded his research, which has been published in MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, OPERATIONS RESEARCH, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING, DECISION SCIENCES, and other journals. Dr. Sweeney is the coauthor of ten textbooks in the areas of statistics, management science, linear programming, and production and operations management. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he earned a BS degree from Drake University, graduating summa cum laude. He received his MBA and DBA degrees from Indiana University, where he was an NDEA Fellow.

Dr. Thomas A. Williams is Professor of Management Science in the College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology where he was the first chairman of the Decision Sciences Department. He teaches courses in management science and statistics, as well as graduate courses in regression and decision analysis. Before joining the College of Business at RIT, Professor Williams served for seven years as a faculty member in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati, where he developed the undergraduate program in Information Systems and then served as its coordinator. The co-author of 11 leading textbooks in the areas of management science, statistics, production and operations management, and mathematics, Professor Williams has been a consultant for numerous Fortune 500 companies and has worked on projects ranging from the use of data analysis to the development of large-scale regression models. He earned his B.S. degree at Clarkson University and completed his graduate work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Very hard to read

I know statistics is a very hard subject on it's own, but this textbook is very difficult to read, and has very few decent examples. I feel that i have had to turn to YouTube and other sites more during this course than any I've had before simply due to the text. I am an "A" average student, but I do not feel that i could stay on that course if I relied on this book alone for my current Quantitative Management course. I know some classes require this book, but if a choice is given, I'd look for other options.

What an awful, awful stats book

I've taken another stats course before this one (granted, it was only an Elementary Statistics class, but much of the material was the exact same-there are only so many ways to do probability distribution and Z-tables) and I can't say enough bad things about this book. Awful examples, overly technical explanations and as dry as eating desert sand. If you're forced to use this book, I hope you have an amazing teacher or some other resources available to you, because this book will make you hate what can otherwise be a somewhat interesting subject. Seriously, if you have ANY other option, take it. 1 star is too many, but Amazon doesn't let me select 0 or 1/2.

This text is well done, but you might check out Understanding Business Statistics by Ned Freed at [...] . In my opinion, it is better written, has better coverage and, possibly best of all, it only costs $39.95.

A classic home spun novel

This was one of the authors best among many others of credited attributes in literature. This set in the 1950 style era, a young man coming into young adulthood is mentored by his grandfather in the ways of woodlore, fishing, human nature, dogs and hunting, The learning of natures way as taught by grandfather to his grandson. These ways are all most non existent in this day and age. I myself growing up in that era was one of the most memorable of my life and will carry those to my grand children. Life long old timers etiquette and humor make this a classic. A grand read.

This book is glimpse back into an America that is rapidly vanishing. Robert Ruark can rightly be considered the dean of serious sporting writers. Gene Hill is very good, but only wrote short pieces. Hemingway was vaster, but his angst and internal gordian knot muddy the clear waters. Ruark walks the top rail of the fence: you get the very best of it all. And nowhere does he do it better than in his two "Old Man and the Boy" collections. Others here have said it, but there are stories here that will break your heart clean in two with their aching beauty, their crystal clear images, the smells and tastes of a life spent in rural North Carolina before television. My personal favorite is "September Song", which is, along with "The Road to Tinkhamtown", one of the two or three finest pieces of American sporting literature ever put down. Any appreciation for American sporting literature must begin with Ruark, and any study of Ruark must begin with the Old Man. Without him, you'll never grasp "Horn of the Hunter", or even "Uhuru" or "Something of Value". The Old Man is the key to all the locks. Favorite quote: "Only hunting and mountain climbing are sports. The rest are just games."

About the Author
Eleanor L. Stevenson, PhD, RN,

is an assistant professor of nursing at Duke University School of Nursing in the Division of Health for Women, Children, and Families. She received her BS in nursing from Rutgers University College of Nursing–New Brunswick and her MS as a women’s health nurse practitioner from Rutgers University College of Nursing–Newark. She received her PhD in nursing research and theory development from New York University College of Nursing. Her area of inquiry focuses on the multidimensional psychological stress women who have conceived pregnancies via in vitro fertilization experience, as well as the adaptive behaviors of men with male-factor infertility. Dr. Stevenson is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Beta Epsilon, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine–Nurse Professional Group, and the Association for Women’s Health, Obstetrical and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN). She has received numerous awards including the New York University Alumni Association Doctoral Achievement Award; the Sigma Theta Tau International Upsilon Research Award; the Rudin Family Award for Doctoral Achievement; the McRae Foundation Award; and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Nursing Professional Group Prize Paper Award (2011, 2012, and 2014). Dr. Stevenson’s clinical career has focused on women’s health issues, including clinical practice in various settings such as high-risk labor and delivery, mother–baby, antepartum, family planning, and infertility services. At Duke University, she teaches in the DNP, MSN, and ABSN programs. Dr. Stevenson has also applied her clinical expertise in the research and development of women’s health and infertility medications. She enjoys sharing her passion for this patient population with students by mentoring baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral students who focus their inquiry and practice on fertility issues to advance science and clinical care.

Patricia E. Hershberger, PhD, MSN, RN, FNP-BC,

a registered nurse and board-�certified family nurse practitioner, is an associate professor of nursing and an affiliate professor of medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Dr. Hershberger received her ASN and BSN degrees from Indiana University–Northwest, her MSN from Valparaiso University, and her PhD from UIC. She completed postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan. Dr. Hershberger’s multidisciplinary research, which is shaped by her clinical practice experiences, aims to improve the health and health care of individuals, couples, and families with fertility challenges. Her research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the International Society of Nurses in Genetics, Sigma Theta Tau International (Alpha Lambda Chapter), and the UIC College of Nursing Internal Research Support Program. Dr. Hershberger is the recipient of numerous awards for her research, including the National Award of Excellence in Research from the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (2013) and the National Institutes of Health Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) scholar award (2009). She is among a handful of nurses who received a prestigious BIRCWH award. Dr. Hershberger is a recipient of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Nursing Professional Group Prize Paper Award (2005, 2014). Committed to advancing research and fostering the next generation of scientists, Dr. Hershberger was elected to the Midwest Nursing Research Society board of directors in 2014. She is also an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

I have just spent the afternoon with the most entertaining, warm, funny, and unusual people; they are the Casson family. In 152 pages, McKay has created characters I want to spend more time with and get to know better. Cadmium is the oldest girl and is learning to drive and pass her "A" levels. Indigo is the brother who dreams of exploring the Artic. Rose is the youngest who shows an affinity with paint as an infant.

We meet Saffy in the terrific opening sentence of the novel, "When Saffron was eight, and had at last learned to read, she hunted slowly through the color chart pinned up on the kitchen wall."

Through her exploration of a painter's color chart the story of her adoption into the Casson family is revealed. She learns that she was born in Siena, Italy and brought to England by her grandfather when her own mother died in an automobile crash. Although the focus of the story is on Saffy's search for her place in the family, the rest of the characters are so wonderfully drawn that the reader feels a personal connection with each one of them. The way the family members interact and care for each other is touching yet tremendously funny too.

Caddy's driving lessons (and her crush on the driving instructor) are hilarious. I laughed and laughed as I read. Indigo's valiant attempts to conquer his various fears are profoundly moving. Rose is a no holds barred artist. Her realistic view and handling of their father and his dismay at his unconventional family is cheering.

I sought this book out when the Junior Library Guild chose "Indigo's Star" as a selection this fall. Lucky for me, I will get to spend another afternoon with the Cassons now.

I chose this book out of chance for a university course paper. Thank God. This book was one of the most endearing and beautiful stories about a fabulously funny and looney family.
I hope that many other people find this book by accident as well.

Quaint and Quirky

The characters in this story will win you over in the first few pages! McKay writes with a wit that calls to mind JK Rowling. The children (who are all named after paint colors by their artist parents) are hysterical and cooly intelligent. The adults are loveable but incapable, however the children make up for that by being the true heroes. The comraderie between the siblings is refreshing and intriguing. I freely give it five stars for originality of character. A good pick for 5th-12th grade, as the ages of the children range all over. You will want to read the sequel Indigo's Star as well as the soon-to-be-published Permanent Rose.
