Great Information - Especially for the layperson

I purchased this book to use in my research for my presentation on art therapy used in the treatment programs for autistic children. This was a wonderful, insightful book that increased my interest in the subject matter. I learned a lot about autism, as well as art therapy. It is easy reading (especially for a college research project!) yet gave me real data that I could use in my report. The subject matter is handled in both a professional manner, as well as having a personal "voice", or tone. I would recommend this for anyone with an interest in art therapy, autism, or to the college student (or perhaps professional) who is doing research on the effectiveness of art therapy when used with autistic children.

Advanced programming (for its time)... but good for historic purposes

I've been a DOS user for decades (? - yeah, decades...), and I've always wondered "How were those commands written?" Doing my own small utility commands in assembly, I could never reach the level of "code tightness" that the DOS prompt displayed... "Why is my COPY command 50K larger than their DOS COPY command?!?"

This book showed me why... Ray Duncan's book must have been the DOS programming bible during its time. For those wanting to learn assembly, and the art of writing good programs, this is a definite buy - since DOS is nearly extinct, the price of the book will be minimal. If you're just starting with assembly, this will give you a reason to write ASM, with actual examples that work.

DOS may be dead(?) but there are still lessons to be learned from its code.

About the Author

Practical Intro to the Development of Concentration

Shamatha meditation, a Tibetan name for all meditations that settle, focus, and concentrate the mind, is not unique to Buddhism. In fact in many ways part of Buddhism's fresh approach is that it took this particular kind of meditation and in a sense "secularized" it - essentially removing some of the religious symbolism and esoterism that surrounded the development of concentration in India. Shamatha meditation is unique in that it's "contentless" and provides the foundation for all other religious practices.

Nuts and Bolts Guide to "Calm Abiding" Meditation

This is the most clear, to the point, methodical guide to shamatha meditation I've read. The type of meditation discussed in this book is referred to as calm abiding, meditative quiescence, or shamatha. It involves the elimination of discursive thought within the mind and the related process of developing the ability to focus on an object without distraction. The most common object for beginning meditators is the breath. This text is collected from a few of Gen Lamrimpa's oral instructions, but the presentation is very traditional and easy to follow. This is definitely a book I'll come back to again and again to clarify certain points or to improve my meditation practice. Highly recommended.

So much fluffy stuff has been written about meditation in recent years that it can sometimes be difficult to even know what the word means. This book, through clear language and concise instruction, blows any fuzziness about what meditation is, how to do it, and what to expect from the practice competely away.

Based on a series of instructional lectures and Q&A sessions at a meditation retreat, Calming the Mind is one of the best manuals that a student of Buddhist (or any other spiritual tradition) meditation is likely to find. The lama's straight forward descriptions remove some of the mystification that seems endemic to some other instructional works without oversimplifying what is called for.

Highly recommended for any serious student of internal spiritual development.

About the Author
Ralph L. Webb is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, and has published over 275 papers in the general area of heat transfer enhancement and has eight U.S. patents on enhanced heat transfer surfaces. He has performed research on enhanced heat transfer in boiling, condensation, fouling, air-cooled heat exchangers, electronic equipment cooling, forced convection for gases and liquids, wetting coatings to promote drainage of thin liquid films, and frost formation.
Prof. Webb is the Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer and is an editor of Heat Transfer Engineering journal. He is a recipient of the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award, the UK Refrigeration Institute Hall-Thermotank Gold Medal, and the AIChE Donald Q. Kern award. He is also a Fellow of ASME and ASHRAE and a Life Member of ASME.

Nae-Hyun Kim is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Incheon, Korea. He earned his Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University in 1989 under the supervision of Prof. Webb. Since then, he has been closely working with air-conditioning and refrigeration industries, where enhanced heat transfer technology has been successfully employed. Prof. Kim has published more than 30 international journal and conference papers related to boiling, condensation, fouling, and forced convection of liquids and gases. He is a member of ASME and ASHRAE.

This second edition is published 11 years after the first edition. Many changes have occurred in the field of "enhanced" heat transfer since December 1993, which was the cut-off date for the 1st edition. The 2nd edition provides a general update to the initially published 17 chapters and adds two new chapters: Micro-Channels (Ch 18) and Cooling of Electronic Equipment (Ch 19). The net additions to the book include 188 pages, 126 new figures, 18 tables, and a doubling of the number of problems (from 25 to 50) in the Problem Supplement.

A major addition to the book includes a Reference Bibliography CD. This CD contains 9500 references. We have attempted to include all published journal papers since about 1960, with a number of earlier references. The references on the CD are in pdf format and are listed in Author-Date format. One may use the CD to search by author, journal, year, or subject key word.

The subject of "enhanced" heat transfer has become much more important to industry with progressing time. Use of relatively complex geometries were initially limited by manufacturing process. However, new manufacturing methods now allow manufacture of many complex surface geometries. Some enhanced surfaces (e.g., boiling and condensing tubes) are now in their 4th generation. As noted in Chapter 1, nearly all heat exchangers used in the air-conditioning and automotive industries are "enhanced" geometries. Further inroads are being seen in the electronic cooling, process and power industries.

This book is primarily directed at practitioners of high performance heat transfer concept. However, it is also suitable for use as a text in a second level (or graduate level) heat transfer course. The 50 problems in the Problem Supplement can be used by readers to test their understanding, or to support teaching an academic course. The book also contains a number of "example problems." The senior author taught a course on "Enhanced Heat Transfer" for a number of years at Penn State University. The present book and the problems are a product of this course.

Fundamental and even graduate level courses in heat transfer typically focus on simple geometries, such as flat plates and circular tubes. "Enhanced" heat transfer surfaces typically involve complex geometries. Study of material on "enhanced" heat transfer will enhance the student's ability to address such complex geometries. Tools to address or analyze such geometries are a key element of the material in the book.

The book is now jointly co-authored with Prof. Nae-Hyun Kim, who completed his PhD with Prof. Webb in 1987.

It will lead you to examine many of your own perceptions and re-evaluate some. It's one of the best books I've ever read.

I've read all three of your books, The Harvest, The Aegis Solution, and Time Cursor.
You have a truly creative mind and see far beyond the author main stream. I certainly could never touch you in your genre.

An interesting read

Thanks to Amazon Prime I grabbed this book as my month of February read. I had read Time Cursor prior to this book in January and enjoyed it and wanted to grab something else from John David Krygelski. I was pleasantly surprised by the deep theological, philosophical, and scientific discourse throughout the book, it was certainly intriguing. This book will certainly get anyone thinking no matter their religious background or non-religious background. I can also see how some would be 'offended' by this piece of fiction. It is certainly not a Christian book, and that should be known going into it. The author melds the majority of the world's religions excluding Islam into the god portrayed in The Harvest.

If you are looking for a book that will make you think, this is a good choice. If you are Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, Hindu, or an Athiest and can't handle fiction that does not reflect God as you believe Him to be, you may want to avoid this book.

Incredibly well-written religious thriller

I ended up reading this book in approximately two-three days. I could not put it down. Although this book is labeled as fiction, the story is laced with scientific facts and probable events. Never has a book previously engaged me and my beliefs as much as The Harvest. This book is about right and wrong, good versus evil, and why we're here. With so many negative events happening in the world today, this books enters our lives at just the right time. Krygelski is a literary genius, and I can't wait until his next book comes out!!!

PROS: Really well written; Engaging; Filled with scientific facts about physics and astronomy; Religious thriller that doesn't push one religion over another; Great, believable characters; Will challenge or reassure your thoughts about the Creator of the universe and how we should conduct our lives.

CONS: You need to dedicate a few days to read this because you won't be able to put it down; you may end up changing some of your fundamental beliefs; the line between fiction and non-fiction may become blurred!

A thrilling page-turner!

Great book! This novel attempts to explain heaven and hell, physics and time, creation, man's place in the universe, love and hate, and well, just about everything. And it does a great job wrapping all that in a thrilling storyline that keep me up waaaaay too late at night reading! But aside from the dramatic storyline, The Harvest was believable and thought-provoking, so much so that even after I finally turned off the light to go to sleep, I'd stay up thinking about what I had just read. I'd recommend this book for everyone, regardless of creed, since the book doesn't declare a "right" religion, but that morality and character are what the Creator truly values. Exciting ending too...buy it, you won't regret it.
