Katie Pritchard knows what men like Dylan McKinnon are like. In fact, she knows what he is like since he buys his flower bouquets at her shop! There's a pattern to his purchasing and she has no intention of getting caught up in that sort of game. But what happens when Dylan sets his sights on Katie? Will these two learn to look beyond appearances to see the person beneath the exterior?

The depth of love portrayed in THE PLAYBOY'S PLAIN JANE was truly incredible. Dylan and Katie have a fear of love, a fear of the pain that the loss of deep and abiding love brings. Both are wounded and in need of healing. There are some scenes near the end of this book that are so powerful they leave me in tears even now to think about them.

Katie and Dylan are both focused on appearances and it is beautiful to watch them recognize that it is the inner soul that is most important. As Katie dresses more and more outrageously, trying to hide herself from love, I couldn't help but laughing! Who hasn't had a time they've retreated or hidden from things, hoping that it will just go away?

The flower symbolism was interesting but a bit gimmicky. The scenes where love is portrayed between the various people in the book were so powerful that the flowers seemed almost over the top. I appreciated learning about the various meanings of flowers, but it was the heart of the story focusing on the power of love and the power that the fear of love has that really captivated me and made this one a winner for me. I do wish the book had been titled differently as I find the "plain Jane" label to be a bit degrading and almost didn't read this book as a result. Regardless, THE PLAYBOY'S PLAIN JANE is a touching story that is well worth reading!

4.5 Stars: Appearances, symbols and substitutes nothing in the face of real love

A short romance, Cara Colter's THE PLAYBOY'S PLAIN JANE packs an emotional story of romance between a man and a woman who learn through each other to reach out beyond stereotypes and appearances to their hearts. Cara Colter's romance brings the reader to a powerful emotional experience as the reader feels the very frustration over appearances that leads the characters to see each other and indeed themselves anew through the eyes of love.

Katie Pritchard has had her heart broken. Working as a florist, she sees love in terms of appearances and symbols and she sees herself as plain. Flowers and their symbolism become a substitute for the risk of feeling and interaction. Sports hero and daredevil Dylan McKinnon with his fast car and sexy looks is irresistible to women. Katie knows everything about his love life from the flower orders he places. She will not fall for this fickle man with his fast track dating record! What will happen when he asks her out? Can they put appearances aside and share from the heart?

True to this author's style in this romance as well as in THEIR CHRISTMAS WISH COME TRUE, Cara Colter uses objects to stand for emotions; here flowers and in the Christmas book, figurines. This author shakes things up so that when the two meet, each character realigns their ideas about each other and themselves. Katie, unlike the other string of women dates, opens the door to Dylan's past and his past hurts. As they see themselves through the eyes of the other instead of their own misconceptions, both Katie and Dylan work through the hurt of the past events in their lives. The scenes around Dylan's mother were very well written --- emotional and thought-provoking. Cara Colter's THE PLAYBOY'S PLAIN JANE is a powerful romance about the transforming power of love.

Readers may wish perhaps the author had spent more time on Dylan and his parents and a little less on the flower symbolism, particularly if they are already aware of flower color symbolism. To me, it felt a bit overdone. For younger readers or those not fluent in flower symbolism, Cara Colter gives enough background for the reader to understand the symbolism and to begin to feel that the symbolism is a substitute for experiencing emotions. Cara Colter's use of flowers and appearances creates a kind of emotionally moving frustration as the reader is one step ahead of the heroine's progression. Katie comes to a breakthrough within herself only after her reliance on appearances is frustrated and broken. Cara Colter uses form to reinforce the emotional message of this romance. This book can be a personal button-pusher but that is also what makes it so moving. Cara Colter's THE PLAYBOY'S PLAIN JANE carries a powerful message for the reader as well as her characters, especially in a context of one's own past adolescence or growing experiences.

More of a dictionary than an encyclopedia, this one-volume paperback update to the first edition (LJ 4/15/86) comprises 600 entries, 90 percent of which are new or substantially revised to reflect recent developments and approaches in the social sciences, e.g., feminism, postmodernism, sociobiology, environmental and evolutionary economics, and cultural studies. Contributors, mostly scholars from the United Kingdom and the United States, are aiming at an audience of scholars and social scientists who need a handy desk reference for quick overviews of terms, concepts, movements, and individuals from disciplines outside or adjoining their own fields. The entries are of high quality in terms of content, but inevitably any one-volume work that attempts to cover all the social sciences will have gaps: for example, there's an entry on semantics but no entries for the equally important linguistic subfields of phonology and syntax. Readers needing in-depth treatment of topics will be better served by the multivolume encyclopedias that cover individual disciplines in the social sciences, the true heirs to the venerable Encyclopedia of Social Sciences (1930) and the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1968). Similar to the 1985 first edition, the second edition of the Social Science Encyclopedia attempts to provide broad and up-to-date coverage of all of the social sciences in a single volume. It contains more than 600 signed articles, ranging in length from a few paragraphs to a few pages, representing current theory, practice, and policy in such disciplines as anthropology, economics, education, feminism, geography, government and politics, linguistics, philosophy, and sociology. With such broad coverage, the encyclopedia does not go into great detail. Fortunately, every entry includes a bibliography for further reading. Like the first edition, the encyclopedia is written primarily for specialists in the field. It has a relatively high reading level and will be most useful for researchers and graduate students.

A comparison of the first and second editions indicates that the editors have taken into account the many changes that have occurred in the social sciences over the intervening decade. In a random sample of entries selected from both editions, only one-quarter of the text was found to be the same. Approximately 15 percent of the entries from the first edition were dropped, and more than one-half of all entries have been revised and updated. A further 25 percent of the entries in the second edition are completely new. Many of the articles contain recent findings and citations, some as recent as 1994. This work will replace the first edition and will continue to serve as an update to the old standard, the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. It will be a useful addition to any social sciences research collection.

I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I did!

Pushing Up People is one of the greatest books I have ever read in a LONG TIME. I thing if you need a possitive attituid this is the book you should get. It tells you that you can do any thing if it is really in your heart. I am only 14 years old and it has helped me save my money and do better in school. So if you find this kind of stuff interesting you should really read this book! I am sure if you can't afford the book it is probubly at your local libary.

Managing and leading people is one of life's most difficult tasks. Mr. Williams understands that people are emotional, not logicaly, and his "Pushing Up People" philosophy is based on this tenet.
This book is not filled with Ivy League, Ph.d., fancy-schmancy paradigms, techniques or such. It is, however, filled with down-to-earth people skills that are effective (but difficult to master!)

A Great Book for any Serious Harry Potter Fan

The Harry Potter series might be the most intricate mystery/detective story of all time. "Who Killed Albus Dumbledore?" is an excellent compilation of several authors who have carefully read the Harry Potter series, and who offer well-informed analysis of what's really going on, along with thoughts about what we'll see in the final book. WKAD is an order of magnitude more sophisticated than John Granger's previous books on Harry Potter.

Here's just one example of the kind of high-end inquiry you'll find in WKAD: In the tower scene in book 6, Harry is petrified by Dumbledore. Harry sees Snape cast the AK spell at Dumbledore. Harry sees Dumbledore slowly fall off the tower. After Dumbledore hits the ground, Harry is now longer petrified. Harry figures that Dumbledore's death released the spell. But Harry must be wrong: AK kills instantly, so Harry should have been released _before_ Dumbledore started falling to the ground. Moreover, a third person can release the victim of a Petrificus spell; on the Hogwart's Express at the beginning of the school year, Draco petrified Harry, and Tonks released Harry from Draco's spell. On the tower, Harry was un-petrified just as Snape disappeared into the stairwell. And Snape, BTW, has previously shown that he can cast an area-wide spell that cancels all currently operative spells; he did this once in a class. All this suggests that what happened on the Tower may have been quite elaborately staged, and that the people who staged the event wanted to ensure that Harry saw everything.

Why? Well, that's still speculative, but now you'll be speculating much closer to the heart of the mystery.

Serious Analysis, Gripping Speculation, Fun Prediction

Edmund Wilson once expressed his contempt for detective fiction by asking about one of Agatha Christie's books, in a wrongheaded and curmudgeonly burst of annoyance, "Who Cares Who Killed Roger Ackroyd?" And there are still no doubt those readers who find Harry Potter too juvenile, silly, trivial or marginal to care about Dumbledore or any other HP character. But people with any degree of interest at all will find this book a feast of information, speculation, and background.

Just don't make it your first critical exposure to the HP series. The editor, John Granger, has previously written a couple of outstanding books on the HP series; it's worth checking them out, too, since they're perfect for beginners, whereas "Who Killed Albus Dumbledore?" which gets into nuance and presupposes familiarity with detail, is for more seasoned HP readers. Better than any other writer I know, Granger has correlated HP to wider literary influences, patterns, and sources, and, in his "Looking for God in Harry Potter," he spiritedly defended the series as a profound spiritual enactment of heroic, self-sacrificing action when it was under attack. In arguing the presence of age-old redemptive story lines and placing them in a whole context of Western culture, especially the misunderstood practice of alchemy, Granger has persuaded me (and many other readers) that the HP series -- enthralling and wonderfully entertaining as it is -- holds serious value expressed by Rowling with profound spiritual insight and consummate artistic skill.

In this volume, Granger collaborates with five other HP experts to show that what we think we saw might not be the reality and to speculate with tight reasoning on detailed evidence about Rowling's crucial technique of making us believe that what we see through Harry's eyes -- limited and incomplete evidence -- is only part of the whole picture. The subtitle sets the theme: "What Really [underscore] Happened in 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?'" The key is, as Granger argues, deliberate and skillful "narrative misdirection."

Other topics include Wendy B. Harte's analysis of the curse on the Black family tree, an essay rich with informed speculation about the actual role of the Black family. If only the other members were like Sirius! Have they been serving Voldemort or not? Harte's comments take us to the question of what happens in the seventh volume; none of the topics can avoid spilling over into guessing how the series must end.

Sally M. Gallo shows how Dumbledore and Slughorn cooperated to create a brilliant illusion, a beautifully planned deception, just as Joyce Odell weighs the evidence that the events on the tower could be a conspiracy to mislead. What Harry witnesses may be pure stage magic. But mislead whom? and why? You have to read it to find out. Daniela Teo sets out to identify the remaining horcruxes and show how to get to them. Is Harry himself a horcrux, as so many have surmised? Read about it here. Read, too, Swythyv's comments on the Nymphadora Tonks-Remus Lupin romance, which -- surprise! -- is anything but what it seems.

And don't miss the chapter "Great Expectations," where all the participants explicitly predict what the last volume will bring. The diagram on pages 218 and 219 is not to be missed, and it will be really fun later on to compare its predictions with actual developments when the book is published.

Although there's plenty here to satisfy advanced devotees, and while the speculation turns on smallish points at times, you can be certain that the issues are never picayune. Whole theories of perception and analysis are brought into play, and the entire volume is as serious in its methods as it is exhilirating (and sometimes exasperating) in its ingenious guesswork and analysis. After Granger's first couple of books, no interested reader could ever take the HP series for anything but a major achievement, and this volume deepens the analytical seriousness and the literary insight while keeping a great sense of joy in reading.

If you're past the introductory phases of what's too lightly called fandom, you will treasue this book. Hurry and get it now so you can compare it with the actual seventh volume. Keep an eye out, too, for Granger's forthcoming book; it has the best analysis of postmoderism ever, and I've read plenty!

The Ultimate Exercise In Harry Potter Theorizing

"Who Killed Albus Dumbledore" proports to be a cross-section of the online world of Harry Potter theorizing. It consists of essays written by six fan theorists who dominate the land of cyber-Potter websites, blogs, and discussion boards. The book is not an attempt to understand or analyze JK Rowling's novels in a cultural sense, nor is it a forum for out-and-out predictions about the remainder of the series. For any astute fan of the Potter series, it is clear that Ms. Rowling is constantly engaging in misdirection while telling her stories. The books may not be mysteries, per se, but with only one book to go, there is still very much of a puzzle to unravel. This book is basically a series of very well written pieces that illuminate dozens of examples of this "narrative misdirection." They try to interpret Rowling's novels (Half Blood Prince, in particular), and establish theories about what has been going on beneath the surface of the series. Some of the theories are a bit "out there," and frankly I disagreed with many of them, but the point of this book is not to convince the readers of the authors' opinions. It is, instead, to invite the reader to read the series critically, and create his or her own theories. This is a very fun read. John Granger's essay is brilliant if not a little quirky. Wendy Harte's piece is extremely intriguing, as well. The Livejournalist "Swythyv" contributes a hilarious exerpt from one of her posts. The gem of the series is Joyce Odel's "Welcome to my Murder," which may be the most intuitive, observant, and comprehensive bit of theorizing I have ever read. All of these writers have been engaged in online discussions of Harry Potter for years, and this book is only an snipit of their individual contributions to the online theorist community. This is a must-read for any serious fan of Harry Potter, and it certainly makes you wants to check out the writers' respective websites.

This siddur should replace the existing siddurs in synagogoues

Most Jews read the siddur, a Hebrew word meaning "order," implying the order of prayers, with little or no comprehension of what they are reading. They are no different than Christians and Muslim. All fail to fulfill the purpose of prayer. The Hebrew word for prayer is tefillah, which is based on a root that means "to judge oneself." Prayer in Judaism is more than a petition, the basic meaning of the Latin and Greek word upon which "prayer" is based. It is a time of reflection, of inner judgment, of considering change and improvement.

The siddur is an anthology of widely divergent ideas that were composed by Jews - and non-Jews in some instances, like the ma tovu ohalekha prayer that is at the beginning of the siddur - with different ideologies over a long period of time. The siddur contains pieces from the Bible, such as Psalms, and poems written in the sixteenth century by mystics, such as the prayer welcoming the Sabbath called in Hebrew lecha dodi. By incorporating such a wide spectrum of views, the rational and the mystical, old and relatively new, Jews are capable, if they understand the prayers, to reflect on what is being said, the history of their religion, the concerns of its adherents, see if and how the prayers relate to their lives, and ask themselves whether the prayer they are reading can help them develop themselves and improve society.

Does the new Koren Siddur improve upon these matters and aid Jews in better understanding what they are reading?

The answer is an emphatic "yes." Indeed this is one of the primary purposes of the new siddur. It aids Jews in acquiring all of the above-mentioned benefits by its manner of presentation, its translations and its commentaries. The following innovations of this new siddur are a small sample of how this siddur enhances its users' period of prayer and their understanding of Judaism.

* Both the Hebrew and English are written with a beautiful font especially designed to enhance the siddur.

* Both the Hebrew and English are generally written with poetic spacing that, unlike run-on sentences, prompts the reader to think and consider the meaning of each phrase, as in the mourner's kaddish:
Magnified and sanctified
may His great name be,
in the world He created by His will.

* There is a rational acceptance of the existence of the State of Israel and the United States, which is absent from the currently widely-used siddur. There are services for Yom Hazekaron, Israel's Memorial Day, Yom HaAtzma'ut, Israel's Independence Day, and for Yom Yerushalayim, the day commemorating the reunion of Israel's capital Jerusalem.

* Highly significant is the English translation and commentary of Sir Jonathan Sacks, the chief rabbi of the British Empire. Rabbi Sacks introduces the siddur with an instructive thirty-two page Understanding Jewish Prayer. Rabbi Sacks' English is impeccable, unlike the yeshiva-type English contained in the currently popular siddur.

* Unlike this currently popular siddur that openly promotes a mystical ideology and a world-view where God is present in everyday affairs and manipulates individuals, groups and nations like puppets to do His will, Sacks' translation and commentary is open-minded and reasonable. For example, while discussing Israel's Independence Day, he mentions the mystic Nachmanides' view (in his commentary to Leviticus 18:25) that Jews only fully fulfils the divine commands (mitzvot) when they perform them in Israel. Sacks writes, among other things: "Interpreted non-mystically, this means that the Torah represents the architecture of a society, it is not just a code for the salvation of the soul. The Torah includes laws relating to welfare, the environment, the administration of justice, employer-employee relations, and many other matters not normally thought of as religious. It is less about the ascent to heaven, than about bringing heaven down to earth in the form of a just, gracious and compassionate social order." This world-view stands in stark contrast to that advocated in the currently popular siddur.

* The new siddur contains a Guide to the Reader section that is an excellent introduction to how Hebrew should be pronounced and explains how the editors of the siddur made pronunciation easy by inserting clues in the Hebrew text. An example is that the emphasis on all Hebrew words should be on the last symbol except where the editors placed a small line next to the vowel in words that are not so pronounced.

* There is a section explaining how the services differ in Israel.

* There are 66 pages of 490 instructions on the laws of prayers.

* The editors of the new siddur recognize, as they should, that there have been centuries of debate as to the wording of some prayers. Two pages delineate these differences.

* Many people do not know when and how to respond to certain prayers - for example, should one say "amen." This is addressed.

* There are charts indicating what prayers could be said for special occasions, such as the birth of a child, for an illness and for guidance.

* Many synagogue attendees cannot read Hebrew and do not know how to navigate through a siddur, so the editors placed an English transliteration of the two types of mourners' kaddish as the last pages of the siddur.

* It is refreshing and characteristic of the Koren Siddur to read on page 26 that Jews "believe that every human being is equally formed in the image of God," men and women, Jew and non-Jew.
These are just some of the many innovations introduced in the Koren Siddur. Synagogues should replace their current prayer books and give their parishioners this magnificent volume.

The Koren-Sacks Siddur

This word alone is enough to conjure up praise, disgust or tepid acceptance among my Orthodox readers. The publisher, which has been printing Jewish material since 1977, is edited by Rabbis Meir Zlotowitz and Nosson Scherman who spawned a revolution within the realm of Jewish publishing.

The enormously popular ArtScroll Siddur, available in a variety of translations and styles, can be found in any American Orthodox synagogue today. And the company's vast collection of translated gemaras, TaNaChs and hashkafa-centered books have made Jewish learning accessible to an unprecedented number of observant and non-observant Jews.

In my view, the Jewish world should be grateful for the establishment of ArtScroll. Before the company's vast library of prayer books and scriptural texts, there were few options in Jewish study available to those who were not fluent in Hebrew. Now, people actually have an idea of what they're saying and studying at shul/home/school/yeshiva, and this is a beautiful thing.

But there are some things about ArtScroll I do not care for. Their translations are sometimes vague and often non-literal (Shir HaShirim is one of the more notorious examples I can think of regarding this phenomenon), they are less open to non-Charedi ideas and their "novels" frankly suck.

This is where alternative publishing houses, such as Metsudah and Koren, come in.

Koren is a Jerusalem-based publisher who, like ArtScroll, has its own unique typeface and style. According to [...], Eliyahu Koren in 1961 "set out to publish the first Tanakh (Bible) edited, designed, printed and bound by Jews in nearly 500 years." Most people who own a Koren Tanach will notice that its "font" is old-yet-modern looking, and its cream-colored paper is thin to keep the sefer from becoming too heavy.

In 2009, Koren teamed up with Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom/British Commonwealth. Sacks is known worldwide for a Zionistic/Modern-Orthodox, scholarly approach to Judaism, and even those who don't agree with everything he says regard him as a "chashuv" man.

The result of the Koren-Sacks collaboration is a siddur which I honestly find quite delightful. Here are some things I'd like to say about it...

The first thing I noticed about this siddur is that it is very "Koren-esque". The thin, cream-colored Koren paper is used, and the famous Koren typeface appears here. At the same time, it will be immediately noticed by all who use this siddur that unlike ArtScroll, the Koren-Sacks siddur places the Hebrew text on the odd-numbered pages and their English translation on the even-numbered pages. This takes some getting used to, but I believe it makes tefila flow more smoothly.

Good but don't use as ONLY source of CK prep

Hey everyone! I found it easy to read and very helpful specially for Internal Medicine. My advice for all of you having 8 weeks for reviewing is to go over Kaplan Lecture Notes, supplement with Master the boards 2 CK strongly for Internal Medicine, then use Master the boards 3 for all other areas of specialty; Peds, OBGYN, Surgery ect and go back to First Aid for STEP 1, yes First aid for step 1 ONLY for Bio-statistics, Ethics and such topics.

In general Master the boards Step 2CK is a great addition to your overall weapons in getting ready for Step 2 CK but don't rely on it solely. Also be aware that you MUST get a question bank (my choice, USMLE world) and DO ALL THE QUESTIONS, timed, random and closer to the big day, do at least 2 simulated full length tests taking the breaks as if you were in the real exam. Believe me, endurance and physical training is also a part of the prep. Also try to do at least 2-3 NBME Tests.

So, get your study books together and BEGIN! Don't forget DO ALL THE QUESTION BANK !!! TIMED, RANDOM, TAKE NOTES OF WHAT YOU NEED TO REVIEW AND NAIL IT !!!

Dubious reviews!!

In 24 hours there have been 5 new 5 star reviews by people that have reviewed nothing else. This has made me really doubt this product and the integrity of Dr. Fischer. It looks easy to read on first glance but I noticed fairly quickly that there are a lot of things missing (like for starters, all of biostats). I just randomly wanted to look up DVT/PE prophylaxis in pregnancy (a common ob topic) to see if it would be different than non-pregnant (as in DO NOT USE WARFARIN)... and it does not make any mention of this. Bottom line, be vary careful in solely relying on this book and the reviews on amazon for it.

Agree with previous reviews questioning integrity of the 5 stars, this is a useless book

Like all things on amazon, i buy items based on reviews. I was surprised this book had better reviews than First Aid, as I lived by first aid for Step 1 and its many other clerkship-specific books. Regardless, I figured it was worth a shot.

This book is useless because it serves no purpose for step2 studying. It's lacking in all areas. It's brevity on topics makes me question what they were thinking when it was composed. I often couldn't find supplemental info on drugs, syndromes and diseases i found difficult on uworld. On top of that, a lot of the information it did have was extremely obvious or just plain silly. For ex, a box on one page said, in response to uterine atony, "a = without, tony = tone." Wow! Or, may favorite, "uterine rupture means there's a whole in the uterus." OH my, now it makes sense! Thanks for clarifying. It also lacks useful memorization tools that First Aid offers.

Overall, I'm very disappointed with this book. I stopped using it after a few weeks. Based on my scores in school, I can unequivocally say this book will not help you master anything.
